Esophageal, so I hear. Yeah, he got jobbed a bit against Holmes. If I remember correctly, that was on Saturday afternoon on NBC. I was just a kid (but actually boxing at the time) and thought Williams won. I certainly thought that he would continue to be a major force in the division but that wasn't really to be. I also remember an anecdote about him being a promising track star (decathlon?)... I don't know if that's just the fog of time on that latter detail.
Had no idea he was sick.RIP Carl.If not for his chin, probably be talking about him now as one of the greats.May have won a gold if he stuck around for the 84 Olympics also.
Was one of the better contenders around between 1985-89. Was very unlucky not to get the decision against Larry Holmes.
Sad news. I liked Carl Williams. I saw him losing by a whisker to champion Larry Holmes, but, truth be told (no pun), he had his opportunities and just never sealed the deal. Good fighter with a good presence in the ring. Rest in peace, bro.
Saddened by this news. Truth was a really nice guy, and a really good fighter. Stellar jab, man, and great feet. Gave Holmes all he could handle, and whipped some good fighters. Gave Morrison a great argument at the very end. I was a fan.
