I wasn't aware that Carl backed off on the recognition thing, though I don't doubt it. When I spent time with him, I recounted his career, the affect time has on people's memories of a fighter, and all that the fighter had to overcome to make it to that moment (or in Carl's case, moments)...and that for a time, a spell, such a fighter is special, far above average and rare. And that they are mostly overlooked and forgotten after the lights have dimmed, the smoke cleared and the cameras turned off.

As our time drew to a close, he connected with me as I thanked him....thanking me for "making him feel special once again...as if he were still that fighter I once was....the guy no one today suspects that I ever was, that I used to be".

I was touched by his admission.

As a human being, Carl connected with me moments into our time. I had to remind myself that he almost became the World heavyweight king, that he was in fact a bridge to heavyweight history, or that he was once a very effective and talented heavyweight. I was very much engaged with Carl the person. I thank God to have spent time with him.

I always thought he should've done some boxing commentary somewhere. He was always very well spoken.

Great offensive skills but bad defensive skills. He was frustrating because of that.
