Carl Thompson WAS getting the shite smacked out of him until the 5th when Haye wilted,it was his learning fight,Haye wanted to impress but it backfired on him.
It won't be similar for Wladimir as he doesn't fight like Thompson. Wladimir tends to wait a lot, Thompson just went all out and Haye was looking/expecting to KO him early and ran out of gas. Wladimir won't test Haye's stamina as he will be waiting a lot in there and give Haye enough room to last long if not the full 12 rounds.
exactly right. young inexperienced haye punched himself out on Thompsons head. His face at the end of the fight didn't look like it had been easy!
For the people who have never seen Thompson fight, he is a notoriously slow starter. He had hell with Eubank in the early going and Thompson comes into his own as the fight progresses. As for the people who are saying Haye ONLY lost because he punched himself out, you are at the same time doing a disservice to the pressure Thompson was putting Haye under. Haye was forced to fight by Thompson and he went with it. Icant believe people are calling Thompson for doing the job, irrelevant of how he got it done. You have to remember whilst Haye was "green" Thompson was 40. It was a good fight, a great win for Thompson and a great learning fight for Haye.
Don't you love it when someone opens their mouth and has it instantly shut with no comeback. Seems to happen to you a lot Farmboxer:deal
This is why Haye probably never will fight Vitali Klitschko. Like Thompson, Vitali can absorb punishment if he has to. He also throws a lot of punches per round and can put a fighter under pressure when he wants to. Ask Lennox Lewis. If Haye waits long enough, he may have the opportunity to be stopped by another 40-year-old. Just a larger one than Carl Thompson.
Thompson totally out foxed Haye that fight - Haye punched himself out trying to KO the ultra durable Thompson and once that was the fight was as good as over. It was a naive performance from Haye and you gotta assume he has learnt from that.
I was at this fight in London, great fight, so many times I thought Thompson was gonna go, only for him to come back (what a warrior), but I think if they had ever fought again Haye wouldve won by KO. I think at the respective stages of there careers, I believe Haye thought Thompson was shot (like I did) only to be surprised
Thompson was a warrior but if by "easy" he means taking a **** load of clean, hard shots, full on in the face and waiting for the other guy to gas, then yeah, it was "easy"
That fight is the reason why I believe there is NO chance of Haye ever KO Vitali. If Carl Thompson survived a full blown Haye assault, Vitali, who doesn't get hit as much (which is an understatement, Vit rarely gets hit), would easily "make" the distance. Haye does not have one punch knockout power, when confronting solid opposition (unlike a Wladimir or Tua) and he does not have the stamina to wear an opponent down (unlike Vitali). In addition to that, in order to hit with significant power, Haye has to pull and leave himself exposed to a counter. Astute technicians like the Klitschkos or even an Eddie Chamber, would take advantage of that. All of that doesn't bode well for Haye, what's more painful is that one of the key ingredients in the boxing of today is height and reach. He's not a small HW, but he's definitely lost the advantage he had at CW, fighting smaller people than him, being able to control the tempo. His reach looks smaller too, coming up to this division. Not good when facing the Klitschkos, who utilise their reach advantage very well. Haye, for his own sake, should avoid the Klitschkos. He'd make very entretaining fights against Arreola or against Eddie Chambers.
I love the way people assume because of this defeat 5 years ago he has no chance against Vitali, as if he hasn't learned from it. By that context, Vitali can't possibly beat Haye because he'll quit after 9 rounds again. The fact that some people think he fights the exactly same way as he did against Thompson is hilarious. Look at the Valuev fight. It may of been boring, but he was effective because he paced himself and won on the scorecards in Germany. He knows how to pace himself now and is more realistic about the chances of a quick knockout. This defeat made his career.
