Im not, just dont know how else to reply to something like that when there is no precedent for BJ doing that to a legit WW since Hughes 1. I honestly believe Condit will win this
Is BJ as good on the ground at WW as he was at Lightweight at this point in his career, can he choke out Condit, can Condit take Penn down, can he keep him there, etc. It's one of those fights I'm much more interested to see the standup game.
BJ will look good early I think, I can see him taking a lead then Condit coming back at him much like he did to MacDonald. BJ can wilt under constant pressure. Either Penn 2-1 or Condit late stoppage, I'm torn.
IF Penn can take Condit down it will drain him completely, and I cant see him out striking Condit significantly either. Penn will wilt.
Penn is a fast starter normally. Condit aint gonna get tired so he might change his strategy based on that, though.
I think ego will drag Penn into a war of attrition which he cant win. It took him 10 rounds and he still didnt realise he should go for the take down against Edgar. Now Condit doesnt have the footwork of Frankie but he's no Kimbo in that department either, and the power difference will be significant. And Im not even going to mention reach knowledge...
I don't think BJ looked highly focused at all in the second Edgar fight. I think he looked hesitant and flat. He didn't have the fire that he took into the fights with Sherk, Stevenson, Sanchez, Florian etc that he seemed to have regained when he went in with Hughes and Fitch. BJ seems to me like an MMA version of Roberto Duran or James Toney, the guy can be a genius for several fights or several years in a row, and then one night he just takes his eye off the ball. He's not the highly motivated, consistent, ultra-disciplined type like GSP is.
He took Frankie down a few times in the rematch, just couldn't keep him there. Also, Frankies footwork and in-n-out style is what gave Penn problems. Completely different fighter then Condit. And ego didn't stop him from taking Fitch down. :deal
What gave Penn's problems were being flat footed and being stationary behind the jab against Frankie and not knowing how to close the distance and adjust. Love to see him trying to keep Condit behind the jab And how did the last half of the Fitch fight go once BJ shot his load taking John down :deal
Ok let's switch it up. Frankie had very good movement and very fast footwork to get him in and out on BJ. GSP has the best top game in the sport arguably, and over 15lbs of muscle, which allowed him to lay on BJ all fight wearing him down. Fitch has the 2nd best top game in the WW division, and over 15lbs of muscle on BJ, which allowed him to lay on him that third round. What does Condit have that will trouble BJ?
Well rounded striking using kicks, knees and punches, true 1 shot knock out power, good submission game probably the only advantage Id concede to Penn between the two guys, decent wrestling, excellent chin, fantastic gas tank, 15lbs + of muscle, 5 years younger, and 6 inches of reach knowledge
