Carlos Góngora Mercado born on 04/25/89 is a 6'1 Super Middleweight with a 10-0 8 KO's record. Born in Esmeraldas, Ecuador and fighting out of Brooklyn, New York, USA. Gongora sadly like most halfway decent amateurs from South America, seems to be getting lost in the shuffle after turning pro, he's been a pro for going on 3 years, and he's still a complete unknown. His sole appearance on TV came on the undercard of a PBC show Fox Sports 1, where he violently dispatched of Ronald Mixon in a half a round, and hasn't been seen since. As an amateur he has a fairly impressive resume, he's 4-0 over Felix Valera, has wins over Benchabla and once promising American Shawn Estrada, and went 1-1 with Blanco. He seems to have 2 kryptonites, slickness and fellow southpaws, he went 0-5 against Cuban wunderkind De La Cruz, beaten by Browne, Falcao (which he avenged in a grueling match in the WSB), Niyazymbetov and was stopped by Korobov. As I just mentioned, he's an awkward southpaw, as most southpaws are, and seems to be packing a little bit of a punch, because when he connects with a good shot, he not only drops them, the KD's are nasty as hell, he flattens their asses. Granted, these KO's are against overmatched tin cans and he has gone the distance twice, his power seems on the legit side from the eye test. He needs to take a few incremental steps up in competition before I start rating him as a threat in the division, or even think he can be a contender, but he looks promising, and he's worth a watch. Seems to have some power and skill. What's with his fluctuating weight though? Does he have trouble with his de- and rehydrating?
That's an excellent question, I was wondering that myself, he seems to do it seamlessly, at least against bums, if he knows what's good for him he needs to settle on Super Middleweight, at least he has a fighting chance in a terribly weak division to make an impact, but Light Heavyweight, well.... he'll probably be massacred.
maybe he still needs to learn to weigh-in as closely to the 168 limit as possible to rehydrate as big and strong as possible. And I agree with staying away from 175 for the time being. Massive difference with 168 talent- and powerwise
Spanish speakers may enjoy this, which I'm not, all I got from it was his girlfriend is fairly cute. This content is protected
I thought he showed promise a few years back, but stagnated badly over the last few years. Well goddamn, he bounced back in a big way today. Taking the scalp of damn impressive SMW prospect Ali Akhmedov. Bravo Carlos.
He’s gained a fan in me. very composed and precise puncher completely took over the fight once he started to box on the front foot.
This guy will do quite well in his career, Akhmedov is a very good win. Big southpaw with power and great punch selection who's packing quite the chin to boot, a very good basis for being a world champ. The response from the Ecuadorians to his win is great too, they already love him.
