this is one time i bet agianst sugar ray ... 147 was ray rays .... 160 was all carlos ... he isn't gonna be impressed by flash
this is realy tough one but i have to go with monzon monzon will not be fazed and is too sturdy for anythind sugar throws at him
Pretty much what he said Monzon is possibly the 2nd greatest 160 pounder behind Hagler so I would choose Monzon easily at 160.
Monzon is the greatest 160lbs fighter ever with Greb as his only real comp. because of Greb's resume. Stylistically he holds an edge of SRR IMO. Robinson would struggle to get inside Monzon's jab and long reach. Close fight, but Monzon would win IMO.
What do you mean "flash"? Are you implying that is what Ray's game was based on? Flash over substance? I sure hope not. Either way, Monzon was the larger fighter and the more natural MW, and I think stylistically he holds the edge on Ray at this weight.
Good to see some Monzon appreciation. Watching him fight sometimes he didnt look all that technically proficient and some people I have spoken to who didnt know much about of his opponants or hadnt seen a lot of film on him werent that impressed by the what they saw. He did have a way about him, he was so effective without looking that amazing. The subtle things he did were what you really have to look for and in the end it didnt matter how he did it he always won in the end. I would favour Monzon for sure in this matchup, his physical gifts at this weight make his just about the most fearsome middleweight to lace them up ever. That being said its hard to boil these fights down to just the one event. Generally i try and say how it would pan over 5 or 10 fights to show how much of a chance I give the other fighter. If they fought 5 times I have no doubt in my mind that SRR would find a way to win at least once. He often gets put on a pedastal as a boxing deity but thats not without good reason, he is still probably the best allround boxing talent ever to fight on film.
Carlos by late stoppage. SRR was in his prime at 147. He could not hang with Monzon at 160. Monzon would be too big, too strong, and too confident for Ray. After all SRR lost to Turpin, Fullmer, Pender, Basilio, and arguably lost to Castellini as well at 160.
Monzon's not stopping a prime Robinson at MW. Maybe a late 30's or early 40's version, but certainly not a late 20's Sugar.
