I have to say I do not see this as such an even fight. The hand and foot speed of Jones would give Carlos trouble. I mean Monzon is just too slow to win here. He has great ring generalship and a great jab but I do not see this as a matchup he could win.Competitive yes but not a fight Carlos would win

Monzon's slickness is in his timing - it's immense. He's not as slow as he looks and his reflexes and the speed of his timing in countering is there for all to see. He'd be a danger of catching Jones out of the blue at times where others haven't. He's a great fighter. The danger for Jones is Monzon's countering imo.

Yes but that hardly means you'd be "overly" sure.

Hopkins hadn't beaten anyone of note when Jones beat him ,he was short of his prime imo.

    Your painful explanation is:

Did Hopkins get a magic spell cast on him after this fight or something? Such a ridiculous cop out

No insults, let's see, I think these would count:

And here ladies and gentleman is the hypocricy:

Jones beats the primed second best MW of the generation and you diminish it. While lording up past prime versions of Griffith and Benvenuti. And then you cry to your cheerleader when past prime

No I'm not Mendoza and I'm suprised he isn't siding with the white fighter in this instance.

And the classic tactic of running away when getting called out on your ****. You probably have narcissitic personality disorder.

He didn't but a man is prime at the age of 28. What's better a young hungry contender or champion at the end? I'd usually pick the former over the latter.

Hopkins was miles short of what he was to become. He was a virtual nobody at the time. Hell, it took 7 more years before most realized just how good he really was.

Only 9 of his 23 opponents had winning records when he faced Jones, and three of them were marginal. Hopkins became a better fighter by fighting better quality opponents.

Looking at both records probably the same level of opponent Monzon had beat pre-Benvenuti. It doesn't mean both men weren't prime. They were both 28. Monzon had won the South American championship, Hopkins the NABF.

Monzon had been taken to a split decision by Tom Bethea,he too would improve, he matured as champion.

Yet in '70-71 he's arguably at his peak

But come on, Carlos looks slow on film, do not you agree? I mean there would be a considerable speed edge for Roy. I am afraid that would neutralize Carlos attributes.

In any sport you improve by raising the standard of your opposition, preferably by degrees. So many made that big jump and fell at the first hurdle never to make the grade.
