That’s fair. I think Monzon was disgraceful as a human being—a real low-life loser— but I also recognize that he was a hell of a middleweight. Acknowledging the former doesn’t prevent me from being willing to discuss the latter.
I think it depends on the circumstances. For example if someone started a thread about how charming Jimmy Savile was on an internet board I suspect the response would be extremely negative. Jimmy may have been funny and charming but his crimes are such that I doubt people would be comfortable hearing anything positive regarding him.
My point is people don't seem to be able to seperate his good acts from his bad acts like people suggest we do for Monzon.
But isn’t that supposed to be irrelevant? If him beating up and murdering women is categorically off-topic because it has nothing to do with boxing, wouldn’t Monzon being a pedophile also fall into the same basket?
That's not the point. Monzon's darker side; his hot temper, the violent behavior and consequences it manifested was entirely separate to his boxing. Conversely, Saville used his celebrity status; leveraging this and his extracurricular activities in 'Charity Work' to actively facilitate his serial crimes. This is the most important distinction and the point being made, here.
Monzon was a great fighter and Argentina was deep with great fighters in the 70's and early 80's....Monzon could beat most fighters in low gear but when he had to step on the gas against greater threats he did, much like the great Salvadore Sanchez he put out what was needed to win but against guys like Valdes Napoles Briscoe, etc he stepped on the gas, Sanchez had some great wins against the tougher opponents like Gomez, Lopez & Nelson but also had his share of just win fights. Monzon top 5 middleweight ATG
You don't have a point. This is a boxing forum, we discuss boxing here we aren't here to pass judgement on fighters characters, just their ability in the ring!
Yes - and the topic of 'Crime & Punishment' (for which I am sure there are dedicated forums) quite likely carries many a hole and labyrinth to dive into.
That is probably true. He fought an Old Shopworn Briscoe and smartly stayed away from him. Those fighters helped him improve to become the champion he did. Those gym wars in Philly prevented some of those guys from going farther.
But you wouldn't "start a thread about Jimmy Saville" on a boxing forum would you? On second thoughts, perhaps YOU would!
