Slunk away? I said if they MURDERED a woman and crushed her skull, I'd ignore them too. And what's HOLIER THAN THOU about bashing a violent murderer? Go to hell.
Moralistic? He murdered a woman and crushed her skull. And you're bashing me for pointing that out? You might be the biggest JOCK SNIFF I've ever met. Thanks for letting everyone where your morals are. How many title defenses does a guy have to make for fans to ignore that he slaughtered his wife? Apparently, for you and a couple others here, it's 13 SUCCESSFUL DEFENSES. Too bad Edwin Valero came up short in his title defenses. Instead of hanging himself in his cell after killing his wife, you guys could've still been praising him on message boards and getting his autograph in Canastota.
Monzon was not a good person. That’s is clear. But he was a GREAT fighter. One of the best ever at any weight class.
The number of top boxers who have MURDERED other human beings can be counted on one hand. Instead of PRAISING THEM and BRUSHING THE MURDERS THEY COMMITTED UNDER THE RUG, or making jokes about it, I think there are plenty of fighters in the sport's history fans can discuss. That's all. Sorry I interrupted your collective circle jerk praising a murderer. Younger fans seem to "get it" and most Edwin Valero threads on this board die in a couple posts. Many of the posters in this thread clearly don't. That is all. I'll try not to slip on all the hand lotion on my way out of here.
This post is about Monzon the boxer not about what happened with his wife. Look we can all agree what happened with her is beyond horrible. I cant even comprehend how horrible that was. BUT this is a discussion about Monzon the professional boxer so let's keep it that way. If anyone wants to start a thread on Monzon killing his wife or Valerio doing the same or Ali beating on his first wife because she wore short skirts ect ect be my guest. Again though this is about Monzon the boxer. Stay on track.
It shouldn't be too hard to separate Monzon's ring accomplishments from his personal life. Great fighter, terrible person...it's pretty simple. It's not just boxing; people like Phil Spector and Bill Cosby were great at their respective professions but awful people. It shouldn't be that hard to separate their professional greatness from the crimes of their personal lives.
Overrated in terms of his accomplishments and ability. He fought in a weak era, ducked his most threatening contender for three years, and despite his reputation as this terminator he was actually a patient awkward boxer with a good not great punch who didnt always look great fighting the guys he did who by and large were either spent bullets (griffith and benvenuti) or mediocre eurotrash (bogs, bouttier x2, Tonna). Sometimes when I see people talk about how brutal he was in the ring and his destructive power I have to question what they are watching. Ive just never been overly impressed with his competition or his performances against them. He would have been a good defense for anyone but I think several middleweight champions and contenders from various eras beat him prime for prime head to head. I guess a lot depends on how you view his opposition. Im fortunate enough to have, probably, more footage on monzon and his opponents than anyone in the world (id bet money on that) and I just dont rate his opposition very highly. Yes he has names like Griffith, Benvenuti, and Napoles on his resume but Benvenuti was finished when he fought Monzon and his last several performances and his fight with Chirino bore that out. Griffith was winning half his fights at this point in his career (and still lost a very close rematch to monzon), and Napoles was an older natural lightweight who only moved to ww because he couldnt get a title shot at 135 and going against a big mw like monzon he was totally out of his depth. It was a mismatch, so im not really impressed. Even Bennie Briscoe who Im a big fan of wasnt this unbeatable monster. An unbeatable monster doesnt fail to win 30% of his fights. If you are so impressed with Monzons win over Briscoe then you must think guys like DeLima, Joe Shaw, and Vinales were great too. They werent. So Monzon wasnt doing anything that hadnt been done before by worse fighters almost everytime out so why does he get so much credit? My take.
