I thought that I would paste up the S.I. article on the Monzon-Napoles fight, even though this isn't exactly the thread for it... http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1088283/index.htm
The old Boxing Illustrated mag in the 70's had some excellent articles and interviews on Monzon, as did some long defunct magazines I can't even remember the names of, that did p4p rankings of all the champions of the time periodically, and nearly always had Monzon at #1...ahhh, the 70's..what a decade.
This is Monzon-Valdez 2 from the vault. http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1092673/index.htm
Probably. Not a very nice man. But still one of my very favourite boxers nonetheless. A real scary fighter, not like Mike Tyson. This one was a pimp, a hooligan, a swatter of reporters, a murderer, a gunshot victim and the best middleweight of all time. And he wouldn't knock you out quick; he'd blankly stare at you as you were broken down round-by-round.
Always thought that there was something almost reptilian about Monzon's style,,,without a doubt the greatest middleweight of history. A murderer, a cruel s.o.b., but one of the greatest fighters of all time, easily.
I love Monzon the boxer, everything about him is cool and calm. The person i couldnt give 2 ****s to that murdering ******* thats why hes intriguing
Look forward to an enjoyable read, Gpater. Here's a nice little exert of info from NY times following the crash that killed him. "Before he became a boxer, Monzon rose from humble beginnings as one of 12 children in Santa Fe. He shined shoes, sold newspapers and lugged sides of beef in a meat-packing plant."
