Monzon had the touch of doom!

 

Monzon had it all, so underrated .. He was also great at firing from a crouch it was amazing. At 26:20, sets him up with a slow right to the body and then firing that left hook that lands cleanly before he could get countered.. Again from the crouch at 26:38 that left hook.. So good at creating range deception.. amongst many other things

 

Benvenutis record at this time was a complete joke. One robbery draw against nobody Baird plus a bull**** hometown stoppage against him, a bull**** hometown stoppage against nothing Scott, a loss to ancient Tiger, a hail mary come from behind fluke win over Rodriguez, split fights with nothing Bethea, and an embarrassing loss to nobody Chirino. If Monzon was even 1/10 as good as his ridiculous fanboys think he damn well better had beaten Benvenuti.

 

He did beat him!

Still, i dont see how Monzon can possibly be "underated" when he is on basically every single top 10 atg middleweight list, Nearly every top 5 list and in most cases is considered top 2 or 3. All this in what is probably the deepest division in the history of the sport.

I suppose you could say he is underated in the sense that despite this, he never seems to figure in top 10 pound for pound lists. Is this what the original poster was getting at?

Anytime any great middleweight is mentioned besides Greb, you freak out like a nealous schoolgirl and spew your bitter diatribe on the fighter and his fans. Pathetic. Monzon was great and if you don't see it you're either an idiot or incompetent. I believe the latter fanboy.

The fact is Carlos did the toughest thing in the sport---a road warrior going into the champion's backyard. And coming out of it as the new champ.

Other guys won't sign the contract to fight him. Monzon did. And that was a brutal right hand he landed in there to finish things. Hard to comeback with much effectiveness after getting starched like that.

Listen you little pissant. If you cant look at the facts objectively and see Benvenuti was shot a good YEAR before Monzon got ahold of him then dont bother to respond. If you dont like that I dont think Monzon doing the same thing other fighters held in far less esteem had already done is anything worth writing home about then say so. The guy has a pathetically padded record, built his championship run up on smaller older fighters that he didnt always look good against and ducked his number one contender for 3 years. People act like he was this stone cold power punching wrecking ball and he was none of those things. He was big, awkward guy who had the good fortune to come along when the division was running on fumes and extended his run by ducking Valdez until Valdez power hand was terribly mangled in an auto accident that most expected he would never recover from. Go back and refute one ****ing thing I said. One. Did the papers in Ohio, the live ringside experts, think Benvenuti got a gift against Baird? Yes. Was his stoppage victory in his backyard against Baird total bull****? Yes. Was his stoppage victory over Scott completely unnecessary and total hometown bull****? Yes. Was he outboxed by a shot and ancient Dick Tiger? Yes. Did he have to come from behind with a completely unexpected totally flukish KO over tough but aging career welterweight Luis Rodriguez? Yes. Did it take him two fights to beat mediocre Tom Bethea, having been stopped in the 7th of their first fight? Yes. Was he dropped twice and outpointed by totally mediocre nobody Jose Chirino just after Monzon? YES! Now here is a big question for you: How many of these fights and fighters have you seen? I can guaran-god-damn-tee you you havent seen anywhere near as many of those specific fights or the fighters as I have. So maybe you should stfu and sit back and listen to someone who knows more about these fights and fighters than sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming to the top of your lungs because you dont like what you hear. I didnt mention Greb and nothing in my post had any relation to Greb. That was you. If you get butthurt like a Harvey Weinstein victim every time someone criticizes one of your favorites I suggest you grow a thicker skin or pursue a sport designed for those with gentler sensibilities you candy ass.

You think its a coincidence that he picked a complete unknown to defend against? You act like Carlos Monzon did this epic brave thing. He did not. He was a total unknown at the time. He had never been seen outside of South America. He had only fought outside of Argentina a handful of times. His widest reported fight was considered a gift draw to Bennie Briscoe who had won two of his last five fights at the time. What was he going to do? Turn down a complete gift **** at the title? Monzon came out of nowhere to win that fight. He won the lottery. You really think Don Fuller, Fraser Scott, Doyle Baird, and Tom Bethea were the only guys who were willing to sign to fight Benvenuti at home?? No. Benvenuti was looking for soft touches. He was too busy screwing Italian actresses, jet setting, and living a celebrity lifestyle to be bothered with the grind of a serious fighter. But hey, dont believe me, Im just angry because somebody posted about a fighter other than Greb apparently. At least according to some nobody named "Morlocks" who apparently cant be bothered to go back and see how long its been since I posted anything relating to Greb, while actively posting about a plethora of other fighters in the interim...

 

What a joke you are Krapton. ALL you ever do is cap down on everyone but Greb. And your take on Monzon is bull****. And you know it is. I got my experience by beoing at the fights going back to 1970. You think you know SO MUCH more than anyone else. Your gutless. Why don't you answer the question I asked you years ago about Greb fighting all those greats I listed from the past? You know the one you went running to the moderator about and got me banned? The day I learn anything from REVISIONIST HISTORIAN like you is the day I give up on the sport.
