Hey good to see you old mate. You were always spot on of course. I've posted it a few times over the years but his standing heart rate etc and all that......i think they worked out that the rest period between rounds gave him enough time to return to his standard rate. I should recheck but i'm too lazy hahaha
International Boxing or Big Book of Boxing, 1977, with a blue cover from that issue if I remember correctly?
Can't believe I just found it. Aug. 1977 International Boxing. Ali-Jimmy Young cover. Says he starts roadwork one month before a fight and runs 45 minutes. Says he never goes all out in training, even in sparring. Does 9 rounds nice and easy. "Many fighters go into a fight totally drained of energy and burned out, Not me"
Yep, I read the same exact thing, probably from the same magazine... I thought he said he didn't get up real early like other fighters did. He got up at 12pm, then ran for a half hour, "I don't know how far but it's far enough"... smoke a cigarette... lol He didn't wear himself out like the American fighters do.... We must have read the same article...
That generally means you're going to bed early and avoiding a lot of the temptations and excesses that usually occur in the later hours.
You're right. There are ways to counter act bad habits. And Monzon was big for a mw and utilized that size very well.
Carlos Monzon hardly did any sparring, he worked mainly working on techniques, but the problem was that he had trouble keeping good sparring partners, they would soon leave his camp complaining that he hit too hard.
True, but I wouldn't put Monzon and Duran in the same bag. For all the excesses of his wild lifestyle Monzon knew how to manage his timing for party and training so he was ready to fight when the time came. Thus, he never had nights off and retired as an undefeated champion. Duran ... as much as I admire him as a boxer, he was not always a serious professional. Sometimes it was like he was partying just before the initial bell rang and therefore, he was wildly inconsistent. His "No mas" shameful episode most probably was the consequence of his reckless partying and lack of proper preparation.
Monzon knew when to stop partying and get serious training for a fight. Duran, sometimes would look like he had been partying hard right before the initial bell.
I never understood that either. I get "discipline", but you fight the big fight at night, sometimes late at night. I would think it would make more sense to time your workouts for later. If I started at 5am I'd be beat, then I'd be taking naps all day and my sleep pattern gets all screwed up.
