WBA Middleweight Champion Carlos Monzon (TKO 10) over Tony Licata.

    Sports Illustrated

Carlos Monzon made his American debut at Madison Square Garden, in front of 13,496
boxing fans. Monzon, undefeated in his last '78' bouts, over the past 11 years,
has a truly brilliant dosier. With a sculptured face, 6' 0" tall body, and perfect
physique, he resembles French actor, Jean-Paul Belmondo.

But that is where the excellence ends.

For those who say Carlos Monzon is a legend. That he is not.
He is mere footnote, the product of Latin generosity and emotion.

Oh yes, Carlos Monzon is heavy on the eyes. He is sloppy. He is slew.
He has no leverage, nor the slightest notion of how to achieve it.

His lack of velocity is stupefying and, on the evidence of this fight,
the next combination that he throws, will be his first.

His posing against Tampa-based Tony Licata, a 23 year-old Middleweight with
moderate accomplishments, resembled a 'cigar-store Indian'.

The 32 year-old Champion, at 6' 0" and 160 lbs, is lean and strong.
But anything else than that, we have not found it. The one word we can
say that describes this so-called Argentinian Legend is, 'overrated'.

His victory over Tony Licata, improved the glamorous looking
Monzon to 84-3-9 (58 KO's). But, boxing does not seem to be his
top priority, that is reserved for his after-fight partying.

Despite the unimpressive performance, Trainer Gil Clancy stated that
Monzon would give Sugar Ray Robinson a very difficult time.
'He's very strong and extremely difficult to fight' Clancy said.

We think not. The one place Carlos Monzon would not be difficult for
Sugar Ray Robinson, is in the ring. Outside the ring, maybe.

Angelo Dundee thought his fighter Jose Napoles would defeat Monzon....until Monzon started beating the sh!t out of Napoles.

The best they can do is carp about a subpar winning performance. I mean, like ****, what about other great fighters with worse than that...like Losses...even ko defeats?? Champions who lost nontitle fights..like every champion is supposed to be golden every time out? Even Joe Louis got knocked down by guys like Galento..through the ropes by a Buddy Baer...I mean, ****. The writer had to be on the rag, or like Vic said, it's because he didn't like Monzon's style to begin with.

Sports Illustrated, just a couple of years later had on their cover, Monzon and Valdez, with "Monzon the Magnificent" emblazoned...so there you have it..

The Writer of the Sports Illustrated article.

    Mark Kram

I believe he even dug up some information about '2' of Carlos Monzon's
Argentinian Middleweight Championship fights with Jorge Fernandez back in
    1966 and 1967, to scutinize.

Never trust a guy who's last name is the reverse of his first name.

WTF...is this an article written in opposite world? Monzon was a master technician in the ring, a virtuoso performer. Didn't Monzon end with something like 80 fight winning streak? The guy who wrote this article is a douche.

Truth. Wasn't Kram involved in some sort of scandal?

It had to be personal. Either a dislike.of Monzon style our person, because whatever else he was Monzon was invariably effective. And his off night ended with a knockout win. He wasn't losing badly, our dipped. He just won, like great fighters should, with a minimum of effort and flash and maximum efficiency.

Kram's problem was his lack of comprehension of Monzon's style, that and that he was just ntrying to make a name for himself as an "edgy" sports guru.

Some sports writers tend to hate a guy who wins all the time..they love a lovable loser, which Monzon wasn't. He wasn't as "human" and warm and fuzzy like Duran was.

Warm & fuzzy is not what one thinks of when Duran the fighter is brought up.

He was nice and mellow outside the fight game but as mean as they come in the ring, was said to have reminded Joe Frazier of Charles Manson before the first Leonard fight.

The difference is that he had more charisma and an outgoing macho persona which fans found more attractive compared to Monzon's cold aloofness in the ring.

Duran was fire, Monzon was ice as far as in ring personalities go.

Plus Monzon fought only once in the US against Licata & didn't have a very crowd pleasing style.

All these factors contributed to Monzon being not so well known to the casual public in the US.
