    Although Monzon wasn't particularly slow by human standards, he didn't impress in that area. Add to that, quite poor technique, and he wasn't a great power model. You certainly wouldn't want to copy.

    But he was brilliantly simple. Monzon wasn't afraid to be sloppy, so many of those pawing arm punches were real rhythm breakers that would often land first. He fought very naturally, like a cowboy with a jab, and luckily he had the jaw and stamina to compensate for any defensive shortcomings.

    What goes without saying is that Monzon's timing was exceptional. It must be very hard to work your cool **** against a man who is doing the same moves over and over like an unfair computer game.

    Don't underestimate Carlos Monzon's natural size and strength, as those
    were his greatest attributes.

    Look at his bout with Tony Mundine, a large Middleweight.

    Carlos was physically bigger than a big Middleweight.

    He must have had hollowed out legs.

    Tony Mundine, was at his peak versus Carlos, and could not break him down,
    even after landing his best shots early in the bout. Carlos just walked through them.

    After fight interview, Mundine said, 'That guy is not real, he just walked
    through my best punches, and never changed the expression on his face.
    And he is even bigger in the ring, bigger than any Middleweight or Light-Heavyweight
    that I have ever fought or sparred with. The guy is just too strong.'

    There are tons of guys I would pick to beat Monzon. Most of them just happen to be light heavyweights.

    It's amazing..how can a guy with so many faults..so many flaws, end up beating everybody and retiring undefeated as champion? Lol,...no wonder so many have axes to grind about him. How aggravating it is to the higher critics of the sport when somebody vexes them so much...

    No but you use the same arguments and, 'there's no blueprint to beat him', 'he must be able to beat anyone in the weight class he fought because he's undefeated'

    Kram's articles very often revealed him to be a very bitter and angry old man.If he didn't care for a fighter or his style,he never hesitated to air his thoughts.

    And yes,the scandal he was involved in was in relation to the Ring magazine's rating scandal and that whole tournament thing that Don King had set up.

    The Vitali-Monzon comparison is a valid one.I've always been reminded of Vitali's style when watching Monzon.They're both very good at controlling distance and difficult to hit with consistency.Both,by and large,very boring to watch,though.Monzon's jab isn't the great weapon others have made it out to be,either - not unless constant pawing is considered as a great jab.

    What is the blueprint to beat Monzon who was not, for the record, undefeated. Maybe a seasoned RJ could get on his bike and squeak by. Maybe Harry Greb could outwork him, or Hopkins make things ugly enough, or SRR could pull a rabbit out of his ass. But on a board in which David Tua is considered a h2h beast, why shouldn't a more successful boxer with few obvious weaknesses be given similar accollades.

    One Argentinian fighter who gave Carlos Monzon '3' competitive bouts was
    Juan Aguilar.

    Juan Aguilar of Mendoza, Argentina, was the country's 1964 Olympic Games
    representative at Middleweight 165 lbs. {75 Kg}.

    He battled Carlos on,
    * May 8, 1968...........L Dec 10
    * June 29, 1968.........Draw 10
    * March 7, 1970........L RTD 9

    Juan Aguilar was a 5' 10" 165 lb. Super-Middleweight,
    and then grew into a Light-Heavyweight.

    All of his bouts with Carlos Monzon, were all above 160 lbs.

    Juan Aguilar was a strong bull, but not a big-puncher, as he had no power-punch.
    Juan was more of a boxer and counter-puncher. He had a rock-hard chin, and
    in his prime, was a defensive wizard with quick moves.

    Monzon's genius was not so much his natural gifts as much as his boxing brain, cunning and ability to maximize his physical gifts. He was blessed with a fantastic chin, toughness/resilience and the previously stated ring smarts. He stayed calm, cool and composed. He made very few errors of judgement. Almost life a space alien,...amazing considering he was Latin..he never yielded to emotion.

    Wait a minute... No that doesn't. Calzaghe was undefeated and no one save rabid fanboys picks Super Joe as some unbeatable force.
