Well, the Sibson fight for starters. I think Hagler hit peak sharpness for the second Antuofermo bout. Better defensively, counter-punching was in full flow, nice technical work, no labouring on the inside etc.
So the Sibson fight, which is almost universally regarded as Hagler's most well rounded performance, is the fight you choose to back your statement that Hagler was on the decline by that time? There was certainly a lot more labouring on the inside in the rematch with Vito than there was in the Sibson fight. Not sure where you're going with this. Maybe you oughta re-watch it. Hagler's lateral movement, jab, counter-punching, etc. were in full flow that night against an excellent opponent whom he made look amateurish.
You think? That is an odd one. Yeh, and he was just a come forward slugger in the Sibson fight. In fact he just bored in head first. Good post.
Not to pile on, but I think what we saw in the second Hagler-Vito fight was more a case of Antuofermo just not showing anything to Hagler than any increased brilliance on Hagler's part. Still, anywhere from '81-'83 is okay by me in placing his best years. Splitting some hairs to try to nail it down further.
Yeah, that's what I said... "On the slide" was the wrong term; it would be massive nit-picking to suggest that he was somehow coming out of his prime. The idea that it wasn't quite his best performance was the one I was trying to get across, especially considering how it is seen as such de facto. By "labouring on the inside" I was referring to the fact that earlier and later in his career Hagler had a tendency to bull and slug inside rather than placing his shots, retaining balance, keeping defences up etc. There wasn't much in-fighting in the Sibson fight anyway. Agreed - he was a formidable fighter in his prime years.
Really? I always thought Hagler became much more aggressive after winning the title, before that he was more of a 'classical' boxer than a buller/slugger.
I think he's rather talking about Hagler's infighting improving during his championship reign. He was more of a boxer early on, the outcome of the first Antuofermo fight made him more aggressive in his own words, but he did fight it out at times and it wasn't very pretty. Hagler's KO 4 over Scypion in May of '83 might just be Hagler's true peak effort as middleweight champion... WORD! MR.BILL
I'm with you ... the Minter fight, the Sibson fight, the Scypion fight, people simply forget just how terrific and/or tough many of the guys Hagler destroyed really were ... Marvin was a great, great middleweight ...
I had the "Hagler-Scypion" fight on tape back then, but my sister taped over it with some Lucy bull****.... ARGH! MR.BILL
