15 rounds for the all time middleweight championship. I've been watching some old footage of Joe Gans and how he employed a similar style to Fitzsimmons, such as hand placement and driving his body weight into punches. Gans and Kid McCoy credited Fitzsimmons as a fistic genious and strategist. You cannot discount their opinions re fighting. How would a fight with Monzon present?
Depends on if you see Fitz as BRitish or not i suppose. No British fighter is going to beat monzon at middleweight.
Monzon to me was an over achiever type who won many of his biggest matches vs blown up & past their prime welter weights. Monzon was that strong or fast, and he really did not beat an ATG natural middle weight. Monzon had some skills, but he mainly won by out lasting his man with superior condition, durability and stamina. I think Fitz had better hand speed and hit a lot harder. Monzon style was not to run. I think Fitz wins via stoppage here.
I haven't seen enough film of Fitzsimmons to make a call on this one, but it does seem like a tough matchup for Monzon. Mendoza, I think you underate Monzon a bit. His timing and accuracy were exceptional which made any lack of handspeed a moot point. I never saw anybody make him miss much. He beat Rodrigo Valdez, a full blown, very good (if not great) Middelweight twice. Bennie Briscoe was no day at the beach, and Benvenuti was a proven Middleweight. Griffith handled himself very well at Middleweight. Yes, Napoles was "blown-uo" but that's the only one I see on the resume.
Depends on how Monzon would cope with Fitzsimmons' power. We know Monzon had an iron chin but Fitz was p4p one of the hardest punchers ever, perhaps only second to Langford, and Fitz had also a very good bodywork. Monzon, I think, is unbeatable at mw when it goes to the scorecards. So, it´s all about if you believe Fitz can knock Monzon out. I don´t think so. Monzon clear UD Fitz.
Did Monzon not beat some older blown up x-welters? Did Monzon ever beat an ATG natural Middle? While I do think Monzon was an ATG, the above two statements are pretty much true. Speed was not Monzon's thing either. While Monzon had some power, he was an attrtion type of puncher. What made Monzon great was endurance, druablity, ring generalship, and will to win.
Griffith and Benvenutti are both borderline top10 mws and for sure atgs. Valdez was a natural mw and is a borderline atg. You forgot to mention the great timing of Monzon and that he was very accurate. Monzon never looked special but he was and tell me which mw ruled a better or equal as good division like Monzon, even when we take every single division into account there are only few fighters who were as dominant as him and that against very good to great oppoisition.
I don't think Benvenutti or Griffith are borderline top 10 mws. In fact, I would not put them in the top 20 at middle weight.. I think Monzon caught Benvenutti when Benvenutti was in decline. Benvenutti was KO’d a few fights before, and lost his last three fights in a row. This to me is a sign of a fighter is in decline. Griffin was a blown up welter, and 35 when Monzon beat him. While I agree with much of what you said, I think Monzon came around at the prefect time, when he was bigger and younger. Most but not all of Monzon’s best opponents were older, moved up in weight, and in decline.
You need to be a hit and run merchant to beat Monzon. A skater with a jab. Anyone who is an offensive fighter will lose against Carlos. He's a thinker made out of stone who will eventually loosen your foundations and pull your house down.
