That's it,,Bob Foster brutally knocks out middleweights who move up to fight him, even one as good as Monzon.
both men fought in the division they belonged in and both were great - If Monzon moved up he would lose the advantages that he utilized at 160 like height and reach. Foster was a great 175lber but not a great Heavy - Fight may be competitive but 175 lbs belonged to Foster
This would be a great fight. Monzon is unknown at light heavyweight, but so were many middleweights who moved up successfully. There is obviously a realistic chance of Fosters power being too much and Monzon's untested chin (at the weight) shattering. Let us assume that doesnt happen. ie Monzon can handle Fosters power, at least as well as say Doug Jones. The closest in class that Foster fought to Monzon was Dick Tiger who he Kod. But Monzon is a different proposition to Foster. I would venture to say that if he doesnt KO Monzon, he doesnt win. Foster is a very good fighter, but his fundamentals were poor. IMO, this is why he could never really make the transition to heavyweight. Monzon is fundamentally very good. There is no reason why he couldnt raise in weight. As good as Foster was as a light heavy, i think Monzon was a level above as a middle. Foster did have a decent height and reach advantage, but i think that Monzon would be too good for him and beats him in a close fight, provided Foster doesnt produce the KO.
It is worth the speculation, these two, Bob Foster, Carlos Monzon, both were talked about in a potential bout, just as Carlos Monzon was talked about in a potential bout against then WBC Light heavyweight Champion John Conteh in 1975. But Carlos was very comfortable at 160lbs. Sometimes fighters do know their limitations, those are the very intelligent ones. Money is fine, but sometimes there are more important things than greed and what the fans want. It is called legacy and pride, Carlos was not having trouble making the 160lb limit. It does not take anything away from a fighter who chooses not to want to jump to the next weight class, There will always be controversy related to the Robinson vs Maxim bout as an example. Foster did not fare well in fighting heavyweights, but he excelled as a 175 lb fighter. Jose Napoles moved up to challenge Monzon in Feb 1074, Napoles was defeated, ans was never the same again. He looked awful against Armando Muniz in March 1975, and eventually was stopped by John H. Stracey in Dec 1975, losing his title at 147 lbs. Monzon had smart management, his manager Tito Lectoure would have never agreed to a bout against Bob Foster, just like Bob's management would have never agreed to a title bout against then World Heavyweight Champion George Foreman in 1973.
Fantasy Island starts at !0 30 PM, Ha Ha, Lol. Carlos was a very intelligent fighter to move up, he did not need to.
