Really a mythical matchup because Canelo could never have a same day weigh-in and actually compete at 160lbs. Maybe a young 154 Canelo could do it...but he would get smoked.
This would be an absolute war. I don't blame you for favoring Monzon, Canelo would have never faced anything like Monzon. Canelo fighting GGG would seem like a cakewalk compared to Monzon.
Of course Monzon wins the fight, but there's a real possibility the judges score it for Alvarez anyway.
Hagler would beat the hell out of Canelo. Going 24 rounds with GGG doesn't prove that he'll do good against Hagler. We're forgetting how great Hagler was.
He's not superman but he is always in the conversation for the top 3 middleweights in history. Those two will not. He had a massive reach advantage over them with a devastating and accurate jab. A southpaw and a effortless switch hitter. Power in both hands and far superior stamina than Canelo and GGG. While they both have great chins, they haven't proven that they could eat shots from punchers Hearns, Mugabi, Roldan, or even Obel. Would've added Briscoe but Marvin boxed him. Neither has proven to be on Hagler's level.
How come Vito pushed him to the limit then ?? With your post I don't expect anyone to have been able to stand and trade with hagler, plenty did though, the only elite names true elite were all 2-3 weight divisions below Hagler moving up, he lost to one and one pushed him to the limit, a former lightweight.
You do know that controversial draw turned Hagler into the seek and destroy fighter that he is known to have been? Stopping much better fighters later and even avenging what he thought was an unfair draw decision. Can't believe you can even give the Leonard fight that much weight knowing full well that he was not the same fighter. Plus many thought he deserved the decision. That's like me pointing to Mayweather/Castillo I as a clear victory for Mayweather. You guys wouldn't accept that. Duran fought in survivor mode. In the early rounds, he confused Hagler but countering his jab and landing his right. Once Hagler figured it out, he started timing Duran with his own uppercut. He hurt Duran several times and Duran was holding on. Just because Duran heard the final bell doesn't mean that he pushed Hagler to the limit. I'm sure that Hagler would have stopped him in a rematch. It was clear that he was too strong and and too good for him as the fight played itself out. Yes, Leonard, Hearns and Duran all moved up in weight but they are all arguably could beat the both of those guys at middleweight.
I'm not so hot on Canelo's p4p #1 rating by some. However, as a head-to-head threat, he's a problem in most eras. Tough as boots, well-balanced, sharp counters, and nice head movement. That said the less flashy Carlos Monzon was a true ring general. He picked away, gauged your reactions, then slammed home the more damaging shots. This varying of power is actually one of Golovkin's best traits. The difference is Monzon's longer dimensions and the way he lent away from shots. Nowhere near as hittable. Canelo has a helluva mountain to climb.
