And he was a Light Heavyweight. Still though, based on style, and Qawi's lack of height, this could be very interesting.
that is what im thinking. qawi was only 5´6. monzon was 5´11 1/2. i too think qawi would win, but monzon certainly has a shot.
Qawi natural LH, fought allot of big good LHW's . I don't think Monzon could keep him off, despite his skills. Qawi had a high workrate, good defense and a solid chin also. Think I'll go with Qawi.
I also like Qawi here agreeing with others who weighed in on this. The Qawi who mauled Saad Muhammad and gave Holyfield life and death in their first fight who be too strong and powerful for Monzon to handle. Qawi UD Monzon
Very good fight he had with Holyfield, though he only won about 4 rounds on my card. Monzon did very well against these types of fighters though, though Qawi would be naturally bigger(though shorter) than any of them. But considering we haven't seen Monzon at LHW, we can't really say how he'd do.
Greats points as always Pea. I know that Monzon's most difficult opponent (he said this himself) was the super-tough 'Bad' Bennie Briscoe. Qawi was also a strong, pressure fighter and heavier and stronger than Briscoe. Monzon was probably the greatest MW ever and you could never count him out, even here. I still like Qawi to wear him down and grind out a comprehensive points victory in this fight.
I was wondering why i had to take a break from this forum and this is why. Monzon beats Qawi now or even has a chance? I won't even bother with that. Qawi KO. Monzon is a middleweight and Qawi fought effectively at cruiserweight as well. His power and workrate would be too much for the smaller Monzon. The only fighter to beat the 175 version of Qawi was Michael Spinks(with the exception of the loss coming earlier in his career), and hes one of the greatest of that divison.
I agree with you Southpaw16. Qawi is going to knock out Monzon in horrific fashion. And also you can't believe everything you see, especially when someone says Qawi won four rounds aginst Holyfield and still put him in the hospital.
Regardless of a young, green Holyfield's condition after the fight(to do with how high the pace of the fight was more than likely and what it took out of him), during the fight he outworked Qawi throughout. Still a great, very competitive fight, but Holyfield definitely outworked and outlanded him, winning the majority of the rounds based on that.
Agreed. The first fight was a split decision win for Evander so obviously Qawi won more than four 4 rounds. It was a very close fight and it was a 15 rounder.
Why is it obvious just because of how the judges scored it? I was looking for rounds to give Qawi, but the bottom line is he was just getting outworked in almost every round. A competitive fight, as the rounds were close, but Qawi did not win many of them. From your post I can tell you haven't actually seen the fight, otherwise you'd have given your account of it, rather than stating the outcome of it that you learned a few minutes ago on Boxrec and saying what was "obvious". Did you see the other judges scorecards aside from the one guy who gave it to Qawi in a close one? One of them had it for Evander by 9 points, which was closer to being accurate.
It's not as though Evander scored every punch he threw at Dwight. You can't just give him rounds for throwing more leather-they have to land too. Check out where Wallow says "you just have to very look closely" referring to the way Holy kept missing and talking and got on him for the way he was wasting energy. SweetPea you saw the round Evander kept aiming for his head and it was so obvious he was missing with just about everything. I scored it close for Holy. I also have to say that Lou Duva was trainer of the 80s the way he brought up so many successful fighters. The only ones who flopped were Czyz, Green, and Ramos but only because of the intense competition of the middleweight division made up of Hamsho and Animal Fletcher.
Wished we had seen Monzon at least with a non-title bout at lightheavy. Based on what I know, I think the fight would be close over 8 rounds, then Qawi would take over. Qawi beat Saad Muhammad up bad, but I think Monzon's pride would carry him thru the fight. Qawi by wide decision over 15.
