Not at all. It was a pleasure to read, and I'm not even a Monzon fan.

The difference is basically that Gerald was a great puncher, but Monzon was a great, great fighter...able to deal with punchers, shut them down pretty much by negating their powers, and then imposing his will on them...making then do what he wanted them to. He would have done this to McClellan all the way into the deep waters of the 13th round...maybe even sooner. The fight wouldn't go the distance...a tko or ko for Monzon.

On Youtube there is top quality sparring between a prime James Toney and a young rising pro Gman. The sparring is very telling, Gman is by no means blown away but Toney slowly begins to slip that straight right. Gman's offense though very powerful is not really complex. Toney starts to eat him up, pounding the body and Gman's only response is that straight right over and over. I'm not saying he was a limited fighter but he lived and DIED by that right hand. Very few could take that bomb - just look at Benn he won but took truckloads of punishment. After 3 rounds Gman totally backs up in retreat boxing mode sticking the jab and moving giving up the ring to Toney. Gman could really box he was up on his toes very natural and smooth - very Ali like upright and a long jab shot from the hip almost like backhand sense (sometimes Prince Naseem did that when he boxed from the oustide taking a breather). Even though losing to Toney he was still in there.

Monzon all day for the win. That guy was super mean. He loved a tear up in the ring or the street - doesnt matter. From all the articles and books I read he was surly and took no sh-t from anyone. Although he became mega famous he was always the quiet determined hard-ass from the barrio. At his prime he looked like a choir boy, bowl haircut, no muscle defintion and super skinny, nerd like. But he was muy macho one of the wildiest boxers we have seen out of the ring. To me he exemplfies the cliche Alpha male with the worst traits. Dude lived his life by his rules, he took what he wanted and never backed down. He burnt the candle at both ends big time like Tyson except he could maintain his career. Stamina was never an issue and technically so simple jab straight right tie up. But he was clinical and tough as they come, great chin ultra tough body he wasn't going any where. He will overwhelm you at some point just depends on how he feels. With his style he must have been a monster in the gym barely getting touched bombing guys away from the distance. Its easy to spar rounds when you are in total control and this guy always was. One trait that I think makes a truly great fighter is that it's their ring. Monzon would take rounds off conserving energy, he goes in that stick the jab mode and is just chilling behind it and can do that all day. It's almost like he is saying I will relax now you do all the work but Im still the boss. The guy must have been a total nightmare to fight and defines the saying "take them into deep waters and drown em".

The recent Gman Benn documentary where they met shows Gman was a surly very competitive person. The only problem is that Monzon is twice as bad just disguised in his soft face. One boxing writer described him as "the type of sheep that makes wolves consider a different career". Its this exact personality trait that made him a legend in the ring but also led him to prison as a murderer. I admire the guy in the ring but he was a vicious person outside of it.

A really good sparring session but I read Toney only had about 7 pro fights wen that took place?
