I ran this through the LEGENDS OF BOXING computer simulation - best fight I've ever seen on computer! With the possible exception of Jefferies vs Louis.

The winner by unanimous decision is...Harry Greb!

    STATISTICS

    Punch Points
    Harry Greb- 69
    Carlos Monzon- 87

    Foul Points
    Harry Greb- 7
    Carlos Monzon- 0

    TKO Points
    Harry Greb- 8
    Carlos Monzon- 6

    Cut Points
    Harry Greb- 7
    Carlos Monzon- 4

    Knockdowns Scored
    Harry Greb- 0
    Carlos Monzon- 0

    Judges Scoring
    Jesus Arias: 143-142 (Harry Greb)
    Knud Jensen: 143-142 (Harry Greb)
    Michael Donate: 144-143 (Harry Greb)

From the sim's point of view Greb's chin and workrate were the difference even after he had his third foul warning in the 7th and a point deducted in the10th round for elbowing :)

That even sounds like Greb - LOL

Monzon scored very well early and would have put away most other fighters with his blitz. Monzon put rounds 1,3 and 4 in the bank big but couldn't keep up the offenseive and got outworked badly from about round 9 on.

What would happen in real life - I don't know. This is one result that I can see happening if they ever could have fought near their peaks though.

Monzon by clear cut decision or by late round stoppage.

Monzon had too much skill for Greb. His long jab would have kept Greb on the outside and his tremendous right had would have battered Greb all night.

Monzon's stamina was tremendous (as good as Greb), his chin world class and his cool boxing skills under pressure would nullify Greb's swarming tactics and aggression.

Similar to the Monzon's first fight with underrated Rodrigo Valdes or his second fight with Bennie Briscoe.

I hate to do it Luigi, but it depends on the ruleset. I pick Greb under any ruleset where you have a better than 55% chance of getting away with lacing to the eyes, and Monzon otherwise.

These guys are both top 3 for me.

The key to this fight would be the pace at which it was fought...From all the Monzon fights I've seen....No one has dictated pace to Carlos Monzon, Very tall fights off backfoot, excellent accurate, powerful puncher with left jab and right hand....Everyone dance to Carlo's music in the ring.
Greb however the record book indicates a very solid chin (understatement), very quick hands and feet, and really unorthadox. I think Greb just might have the ability to get inside and use angles against Monzon. Due to Carlos' average (fair) footspeed....He would not be able to get away and set up to fight at his distance.
    Both aretop three middleweights.

Greb wouldn't get away with the dirty stuff on Carlos, and would have to settle for a close unanimous loss in 15.

I don't think so and heres why, Tommy Loughran and Gene Tunney both had size, arm length, and great jabs, and both lost to Greb at his best. When they later won decisions over him they both said it wasn't the jab but going constantly to the body on Greb that was the key to beating him, and that wasn't part of Carlos makeup.

Greb by UD at least. Fast feet, fast hands, and just too damn tough.

I can't say without seeing Greb, I tend to believe boxing improved after the 20s with a greater talent pool and the natural push to improve technique. But Greb may have been 1 of the innovators and athletic specimens that transcend that issue. I think Greb may have been a very good technician and athlete, he is also more proven against the men of his time

Now Greb does have an incredible resume, is this because A) He was incredibly good or because B) He was incredibly consistent. For example Bernard Hopkins would tick box B, while being very good he isn't the best of all time but he is incredibly consistent

We could look at how his competition looks on film to assess how good he is. Tunney impresses me, Loughran looks to be a good spoiler but nothing amazing. Walker impresses me but looks limited. Now he dominated Walker (impressive) and went 50-50 with Tunney/Loughran, who are on Monzon's level on film, Tunney a tad bit better

So I think Greb may win, but if he isn't technically good enough and boxing improved after his retirement, he may lose. If we take the Tunney win though, I'd rate Tunney as better Monzon so you'd be inclined to pick Greb. BUT was the version of Tunney that Greb faced nearly as good as the version that faced Dempsey? I doubt it, so that leaves question marks

Greb, too mobile for the somewhat static Argentinian.
