Monzon by decision...he wouldn't have blown it like Nunn did. He had the physical advantages over Toney and would have exploited them to the max. No one fought tall as well as Monzon and he would have frustrated Toney all night long....tying him up with that long reach and far exceeding James Tiberi in keeping Toney on defense when he opened up on James. Carlos was a master of the 15 roud distance and that would have shown in those deep water rounds of 13 thru 15.
Monzon UD, Toney was too inconsistent at times, he looked bad against Tiberi, and Jones jr, and Monzon was better conditioned for a long 15 round fight:deal..
To be fair to James Toney, he hadn't quite evolved into the complete boxer that he became at lightheavy and heavyweight. There wasn't ay way he was going to successfully deal with Monzon at 160. This was no ordinary Tom, **** or Harry middleweight he would be in there with.
Toney at his best can outbox Monzon on the inside and out. HE wouldn't win emphatically because his conditioning wouldn't be enough but the style suits him and he was that good.
It's an interesting style match up that's for sure. I'm trying to play the fight out in my head and it's a tough task. Monzon's awkward effectiveness, his work rate, jab and stamina would give Toney fits. then again it's unlikely that Monzon ever fought anybody with Toney's skillset & talent, I think thats what makes it an interesting match, both are kind of unknown against their opponent's style.. except maybe Jirov could kind of be compared to Monzon. I think it would basically be Monzon's work rate vs Toney's clean, eye catching counters. Close fight either way but I'll give Toney the edge. He was a real talent at his very best and I wouldn't pick many MWs to beat him. You think? I thought Toney was by far at his best at middleweight, but that's just me.
