I agree with your ****ysis. However, I disagree with your conclusion. Monzon wins by decision in a competitive fight. Toney would of course land the more telling blows as you said. At middleweight Toney was not quite the complete fighter he became at supermiddleweight.
Well, its that kind of fight for me. Back and forth, ebb and flow. I think toney basically has monzon beat in the skill department. Monzon would land those chopping overhand rights, left hooks and probe toney with his worksman-like jab, but i think Toney is the one who would be landing the clean shots, for the most part. This would probably be a tough fight to score, toney's dazzling counters and combos vs. Monzon's sloppier volume and aggression. Not saying Monzon wouldn't land clean with that spear of a right hand, but i have to think that toney's defense would give Monzon absolute fits. Toney had ATG skills he just lacked the dedication of somone like Monzon. Id also say that toney was pretty much at his best at MW, imo. Of course at 168, he was against an inferior Barkley. But for me he looks just as good if not better against mccallum, sosa, johnson or nunn.
To me Toney was a more complete fighter at super middleweight (barkley, littles). In my view, he improved his defensive and counterpunching skills. As a middleweight, Toney looked at his best as a middleweight against Mc Callum I. I agree that Toney woudl give Monzon all he can handle but still in my view Monzon would outwork James via close decision.
Thats fair, i can see that happening too. Im of the opinion that monzon probably never faced anyone of toney's skillset or style. Guys like briscoe are sitting ducks compared to the defensive artistery of Toney. That said monzon was a lot more consistent than toney and always showed up in tip top shape. Toney could not afford to have an off night here.
Im not as high on Monzon as some but this is a horrible matchup for Toney. I think Monzon would win easily.
Monzon did not impress me with speed or top end power. I think hes a trifle over rated. He was however very consistent and tough with an active jab. Good enough to beat Toney on points, though I think Toney would have his share of moments in a decision loss.
