rily ? no1 Cs Toney putting a countering exhibition on d not 2 brilliant Monzon ? Monzon did not fight like Nunn and would have been more inviting and receptive 2 counters , wouldn't he ?

Toney was no midget Napoles or undersized Griffith , and was much more durable than them .

If Hasim Rahman or a prime rabbit punching Sam Peters could not do it , Y would Monzon ? and Toney was shot and severely undersized by d time he fought them , which is not d assumed case here .

No1 Cs Toney countering Monzon maybe a bit more than he could take ?
no need 4 a high workrate , just a steady accumulation of damage over d rds against a not particularly hard hitting , not especially hard 2 hit opponent .

Prime Jirov pressured Toney and if it was scheduled 4 15 , Jirov would have been d 1 not coming out 4d 14th .

Could Monzon , whom did not pressure that strong , do better ? maybe 4 his own survival he could , if he pressed less , but then he'd surely not stopped James .

If the fight stays on the inside, Toney wins. If Monzon came keep him at the end of his jab which is the more likely scenario, he wins. I wouldn't bet against Toney dropping Monzon more significantly than Rodrigo Valdes did.

This fight wouldn't be a shutout for Carlos like some here are saying. Toney was one of the best at middleweight.

 

I'm one of the biggest Monzon fans on ESB and I wouldn't even predict a shutout..no shutout, but a Monzon win nonetheless.

 

Agree. I think prime Toney is being underrated against prime Monzon but I still lean towards Carlos taking a UD.

12 rounds, 7 - 5 or 8 - 4 for Monzon.
15 rounds, 9 - 6 or 10 - 5 for Monzon.

Pointswise the fight would be a little closer from the advent of Monzon being put on the floor by Toney.

 

I think Carlos had a good chance of putting Toney on the deck too.

 

I think Carlos Monzon is my go to pick in any middleweight fight. However a James Toney win is not out of the question.
