I like Maxim in this one. He was very much underrated and was much bigger than Monzon. I think Carlos would find this a frustrating fight. Maxim was probably faster on his feet than anyone Carlos fought and that relentless pecking jab would be in his face all night.

Gotta go with the bigger man.Joey also fought basically a who's who of Light Heavys/some heavys, so he wins over Carlos by UD.

Monzon. I've always thought of Maxim as tough but limited.

I'd favour Calzaghe over Maxim too.

Joey by dec. SRR nearly beat Maxim with speed and movement, Monzon does not have that advantage here , neither does he have the height, and reach advantages he enjoyed in some major fights. I think Galindez would beat Monzon as well.Maxim would box Victor's ears off.imo.

You'd have to out-box him very very clearly to overcome his advantages (or out-punch him of course, not happening here). Maxim is not up to it in my opinion.

I just don't see Monzon as a lightheavy. He was ideal as a middleweight..just as Hagler was. I can't envision Monzon campaigning out of his natural weight class.

Maxim beats Monzon, Carlos will realize he's in over his head about the fifth round.

Guess I'll comment on this old assed thread...
I thought Monzon would be capable of pulling this off then and nothing has changed my mind. It's true Maxim would be the larger man, something that Monzon wasn't accustomed to facing...but where as Robinson reached Maxim with speed, Monzon would reach him with timing and accuracy. Think for a second, if Monzon can reach speedy operators like Napoles, he certainly would be capable of reaching Maxim...I also think Monzon would be capable of drawing Maxim out of his normal form to be more of an aggressor...but this fight really has stinker written all over it. Both guys would look somewhat similar, but the timing of Monzon is superior, the accuracy of Monzon is superior, and the innate ability to judge distance of Monzon is superior, also Maxim had a tendency to crouch over to suffocate an opponent's body shots, Monzon fights tall and finds a crouch opponent with his jab. This is what will give Monzon the ability to dictate and forces Maxim to come forward, giving Carlos a stylistic mode that he is accustomed to...I think Carlos whups Joey for these reasons...and I also think Monzon whups Conteh too. If Boggs found that sweet spot, Monzon would have tapped it too...IMO.
