Benn, after a rousing start, is methodically battered and disposed of in round 8 by a Monzon right. Benn would have no bi'ness in the ring with Monzon.
That would never happen again where a guy wails away mindlessly at arms and gloves. Most novicey, borderline sectioning behaviour seen in boxing.
'The Nigel Benn that beat Doug De Witt would have beaten any middleweight in the world,’ says Manny Steward. ‘And I mean any middleweight, then, now or any time.' You would never bet against Benn with a gun to your head. If you can't hold his punch, you can't win because he will hit you.
I'd also pick Hearns and Nunn over Monzon. Seriously! The breathtaking 40-a-day smoker was actually human, believe it or not.
Hearns would not be able to take a punch with a fighter like Monzon who had 61 KO's to his credit, Nunn was just a flash in the pan, Carlos could go 15 rounds even when smoking 40 cigarettes. But if you like both of those fighters, to each their own.
A light-heavy coming down to super-middle and then going back up to 180 before the fight, against a guy trying to force 168 when he can still make middle. We're talking middle. Not a Benn who would try to actually box guys bigger than him, that's ridiculous to suggest he'd live with Monzon trying to jab him and counter him. We're talking the explosive Benn who dipped in front of you with the most superb natural leverages that were something to behold, against a guy the same weight as him with the same-day weigh-in. Malinga would've dwarfed Monzon by 20lbs. Unfair. Manhandled him if he chose (though wasn't his style). Benn tried out-jabbing Malinga both times, but Malinga had a longer left arm and threw the jabs from the hip like Tommy Hearns; so Benn would dip into them and not read them to roll, slip and weave.
Malinga was very ordinary, but the perfect style to beat a patient Benn with a smaller frame than him.
Oh boy oh boy, you live in La La Land. Benn, Watson, Malinga Monzon makes mincemeat out of the lot of them nevermind what he'd do to journeyman Sanderline Williams who Benn also could've easily lost to.
