Personally, Jones is the only man I would favor at middleweight to beat Carlos Monzon with his combination of foot and handspeed, extreme difficulty to hit on the outside, and in and out type of fighting style. What do you guys think?
For sure Jones at 168 would win, A young Jones at 160 might not have the "experience" to win a 15 round fight where Carlos could possilbly catch up with him late and TKO Jones like he did Nino Benev.
I would favor Hagler over both of them. On topic, can see Jones out pointing Monzon but he would have to very cautious. I didn't like his chin even at the smaller weight classes. Lou Dell Valle caught him and wobbled his legs.
RJJ wide UD, he was simply too physically talented for Monzon, Monzon is 1 paced in what he does and this won't get it done against Roy. 168 and below I don't know if anyone can beat RJJ prime for prime
Long arms and smarts wont get it done here. Monzon doesnt have the style to compete and the difference in hand speed is just unconscionable. Roy lands first and last every time. While i don't see it quite as one sided as Norris-v. Sugar Ray Leonard, it is still very much a Roy Jones night. And forget the lucky punch-Monzon doesn't have one.
Im a big believe of Roy Jones at 160lb(not so much 175lb), but at 160 top 5 defintley. The Old adage speed skills, that might apply here.
I seriously do not think Jones could hang in for 15 against Monzon. He is a withering machine the like of which Jones never faced at the weight or 168. And don't bring up that most over-rated of posing, ducking, weight-drained, fights-for-30-seconds-a-round, pieces of crap, James Toney. Monzon makes Jones fight during the championship rounds and makes this a very close affair if not wins it outright. The sternest test by far of Jones' career and not sure I could say the sternest of Monzon's.
Roy Jones Jr. is easliy one of the most overrated fighters as a Middleweight in boxing history. He dodged all the best fighter's of his era in the Middleweight division except for Bernard Hopkins Then The rematch never happened. No Julian Jackson No Gerald McClellan No Nigel Benn No Chris Eubank No Lamar Parks No Joe Calzaghe....ect The James Toney fight was at 168 He get's a pass on his "What if" skills just like a recently retired fighter. (Actually Jones Jr. was one of the originater's of Debate Victory's.)
