Carlos Monzon vs Salvador Sanchez - overview

Griffith was definetly on the slide, Napoloes was past it and also those guys were undersized middles.

Briscoe very good and tough but not an atg.

Valdez and Benvenuti good wins.

If you wanna put him in there well then you can bring a whole lot of Sanchez opponents in this.

Sanchez fought the better opponents in their primes,and he did it in a short period of time. Monzons list might be longer. But i think Sanchez top 4 wins were better than Monzons top 4 wins.

Napoles was on top of the world as welter king and recall..he had MANY experts picking him to win..the Monzon win gets ridiculously undercut these days...it was just a wipeout for one great champion over the other..Briscoe would have been the champthe night he fought Monzon..if he had fought anyone else that is...same thing with Griffith...Monzon just made the guys he fought look ordinary by comparison.

 

Well agree do disagree.

I dont want to look like im discrediting Monzon cause i think he was awesome and a top 3 or 4 atg of maybe the toughest division in Boxing.

Im just saying its close and was trying to give a viewpoint on Sanchez impressive wins.

 

Learn some reading comprehension. Napoles and griffith are the only 2 elites, and both were old, past prime and undersized.

 

Lopez 2x 0 Arguably past his best and was never a truly awesome fighter with losses such to Chacon showing his level. As just below top top class.

Laporte - As good as Griffith or Napoles? I definitly think not.

Castillo - A solid contender and a good win for Sanchez but again as good as Napoles or Griffith?

Gomez - An undersized Featherweight who was never as good at FW than at SBW, comparable to the Napoles win.

Ford - Solid contender on the level of Boutier, Moyer and Licata IMO (Boutier being a bit better)

Cowdell - Another solid contender, comparable to Tony Mundine or that sort of level.

Nelson - A pre prime Featherweight great who had only had something like 13 fights at the time. Not as good as Napoles or Griffith IMO.

 

Even with being a little Middleweight Griffith was still a Great Middleweight, he was slightly past prime but still a top force.

 

Napoles was a natural lightweight fighting at the weight up until the age of 28 the same as Duran, he was past prime at 34, never fought above 147 where he was small anyway, he had slowed, was short and underpowered at 160

The Napoles win is not as good as Haglers win over Duran for those reasons

 

Napoles did mature into a Light Welterweight really and moved up to Welter.

Also after losing to Monzon he had one of his most impressive title defences when he flattened Hedgemon Lewis who had troubled him before but in the rematch he destroyed him. Also his out boxing of Armando Muniz in the rematch was quite impressive also.

 

I rate Benvenuti and Valdes in my Top20 at mw, too.

The Benvenuti win is better than anythign Sanchez achieved IMO

 

Napoles is a Top10 ww, Duran barely makes the Top20. Napoles did much more and proved himself more then Duran at ww. Monzon's win over Napoles is better than Hagler's over Duran, especially when you compare how Hagler sruggled and Monzon didn't.

 

I actually think Napoles shows how good he was in the Monzon fight. Stepping in with short, fluid combos, only thing is he's in with a guy who's great at dictating the pace AND bigger.....so after a few rounds Monzon has figured him out and goes about picking him apart. Just as good a win as Gomez was for Sanchez IMO.

Also shows how f'n tough he was.

Monzon clearly had the better career (not really Sanchez's fault) and interesting to see people have picked apart Monzon's career but conveniently obliged not to do the same to Sanchez's (i.e Azumah Nelson being pre prime etc etc)

 

Also add in the fact Napoles looked in some of the best form of his life and competed very well in the bout.

 

:good I can't see how anybody can argue Sanchez resume over Monzon's. It isn't that close. :bart
