Carlos Monzon Vs Sergio Martinez at Middleweight for the battle of Argentina?

A tough match up. Martinez is likely a top 30 middle weight or the best or second best middleweight Monzon ever fought. Being a southpaw throws a bit of a ****** wrench in the equation. Did Monzon fight any and if so who did he do? Martinez is a natural middle weight, not a blow up welter weight or much shorter man. He is also likely a top 5 punching opponent for Moznon who did not face many punchers who were natural middle weights. I'd go with Monzon to win via close points win do to his workrate but this match has some unanswered questions.. I'd like so see this one and believe it or not Martinez is still active.

The Ali-Shavers and Monzon-Briscoe 2 fights are somewhat similar in that both Ali & Monzon were the ulimate ring IQ smart, iron jawed great fighters who knew how to survive a bomb and then end up firing back when their heads had cleared up.

 

I known who he was and he is perhaps the best puncher Monzon fought! The short 5'8" 70" reach man and former Jr Welter could hit!

I'm not a Mozon guy but judging by your avatar you are. As such I value your input. I pick Monzon to win a close decision. Those who pick Monzon by mid round KO or less I think are not judging his resume properly and under estimating Martinez chin, skills and resolve.

 

Monzon isn't the greatest middleweight ( Not in my opinion, but top 3) Martinez isn't even top 30. I can think of a few top ten contenders that didn't win a championship at middleweight that beat him .

Carlos Monzon fought whoever was put in front of him, he never ducked anyone. When Monzon started his pro career on Feb 8 1963 there were no calling out other future opponents like back in the 1970's and today. Monzon's final record was 89-3-9, 61 KO's, he avenged his 3 losses by decision and fought 8 of the 9 men he drew with. Monzon's last loss was on Oct 9 1964, he then went 82 fights without a defeat, he won the World Middleweight Championship on Nov 7 1970, KO 12 over Nino Benvenuti, defended his title 14 times with defenses against challengers Nino Benvenuti, Denny Moyer, Emile Griffith (twice), Jean Claude Bouttier (twice) Tom Bogs, who by the way fought at 175 lbs, Bennie Briscoe, Jose Mantequilla Napoles, the reigning World Welterweight Champion, Tony Mundine, another natural 175 lb fighter, Tony Licata, Gratien Tonna, and lastly Rodrigo Valdes (twice). Monzon retired as World Middleweight Champion on August 29 1977. I do not know of any World Middleweight Champion who retired as champion with 14 successful title defenses. To Monzon, boxing was a business and nothing else. He was a pack a day smoker during his title reign, went out with very attractive women, and partied all night during training. As for Monzon's resume, Promoters promote fights, fighters fight, meaning he always fought who was put in front of them. He was always defending his title in either Paris, France, Monte Carlo, Monaco and twice in Argentina. The taxes on his title defenses in the U.S would have been too high during his title reign, there was no such thing as HBO and PPV. He defended his title once here on June 30 1975, a TKO 10 of challenger Tony Licata in Madison Square Garden. Carlos style may have been boring to many but he was effective, always winning, he was not a cheap copy of the great Muhammad Ali, but he was himself, it is good to have your own identity. As for the criticism for his resume, he could not realistically fight fighters from the past or future, that is up to the opinion of the posters.
