And that more or less backs up my point in my previous post...that nobody knows Monzon..ancient history in boxing for them consists in going back to Leonard-Hearns..a cursory review of Monzons record show successful defenses against fullblown MIDDLEWEIGHTS..with the notable exception of Napoles. Griffith was by the time he faced Monzon the first time a natural middleweight, having long outgrown the welterweight division. Moyer, Bouttier, Bogs, Briscoe, Tonna, Mundine, Licata, Valdez..these were all natural middleweights, not overstuffed welters.
I think this would be an interesting fight. Monzon might be initially shocked at McClellan's power and aggression during the first five rounds. McClellan would become increasing frustrated as Monzon would lean back, clinch, and use the jab to drag Gerald into deeper and deeper water. Monzon right hands would tell the story...Tko 13.
G-Man's power would make him a threat, but his lack of defense would be his undoing. Monzon would stay away from his big right hand and gradually tee off on him with combinations before either winning a decision, or stopping him late.
I always found McClellan's chin otherworldly. Jackson unloaded some frightening punches on him and he didn't seem particularly affected. Jackson had been fighting for a decade at that point, was past prime and Gerald was a much bigger man, but still. He more or less took punches so hard that they eventually resulted in his eventual state. Same thing with Benn. He didn't go down until he basically slipped into a coma. Hell of a chin.
A Monzon book would be sensational to say the least. If his life was anywhere near as colourful as it seems many probably wouldn't believe the book wasn't fiction.
Yeah man, no way G-man gets knocked out in this fight. I could understand if he lost by points, but Monzon wouldn't knock him out.
I think Carlos could stop him...but he would be best serve using every bit of his skill and ringcraft to stay away from G-Man's artillery. Either way he takes this nearly every time.
I'd agree... Though a exhaustion TKO isn't out of the question. McClellan's weight draining wasn't good for that and Monzon was a true 15 round fighter.
Don't think McCllelans chin was as good as people make out. He could take a lot but COULD be knocked over. Jackson was past it and could not stand up to his blows and therefore G-Man got to him quickly enough that he didn't get sparked. Benn managed to stay up and we all know what happened there. Monzon stops him in the 11th round IMO
i have heard as soon as he stopped running he would start smoking, amazing to think how good his stamina was
