Hearns possibly by stoppage but if that doesn't happen he'll win a decision. Two stand up boxers with good righthands. Hearns just on another planet in speed and quickness. Monzon won't be comfortable on the outside like he usually is.
Hearns by decision. His sheer boxing ability is often overlooked in lieu of his punching power, but I'm inclined to say he boxes monzon to a decision if he is unable to put him down.
I'm sold on Hearns' skills but I'm not sold on his toughness or ability to deal with a guy like Monzon. Let's say I favour Monzon but if Hearns manages to find the range early he could cause big problems.
Hearns could crack hard with his right and give monzon trouble with his jab, but he would certainly have to worry about getting caught as monzon got closer.
Hearns takes an earlie lead while Monzon is processing the whole thing he then takes control and stops Tommy
Hearns has the physical talent to beat Monzon in my view... but he also has two achilles heels, both which were in evidence at middleweight. His chin let him down against Barkley and his inability to avoid a tear up when he could use those physical advantages made him vulnerable. Monzon had a terrific chin, was obviously awkward to hit cleanly and had enough power in his right hand to flatten Hearns. My guess is that Hearns' reach and speed gives Monzon trouble early on but Monzon remains unflustered. Overconfidence brings Hearns into Monzon's range and then Carlos lowers the boom with a counter right hand around the 10th.
Sort of what I expect too. Hearns would probably be better off turning on the heat early than trying to outbox Monzon. I get the feeling a calculating and tough as nails anaconda like Carlos will figure him out and start picking him apart later on. Could be wrong. Would have been a great fight to watch.
Hearns speed would cause Carlos some problems early on but Carlos would stay calm as ever adapt to it and by mid rounds he starts taking control of the fight and stops Hearns around the tenth round.
Yeah, possibly. It would shorten the fight one way or another that's for sure if Hearns went straight at him. I think this is highly competitive match up and not the foregone conclusion some might think (sorry @red cobra). But I'm still picking Carlos to pull out the win.
