The best version of each fighter at 160lbs. I would give Hearns the edge in handspeed. Monzon was the more durable overall. There are some similarities in that they both like to control things from the outside. Monzon being more methodical but as effective as anyone can be. I think that it would be an intense tactical bout with blazing exchanges once in awhile. I like Monzon to survive some rocky moments and maybe even some damage around the eyes to wear down Hearns and get a late stoppage.
I agree. Late stoppage win for monzon, after hearns giving his all but not strong enough. 8 rounds I give him max. could be less the more I think
Monzon was to complete a fighter at 160 even for Hearns. Competitive fight for the first 6 rounds then Monzon takes over for a stoppage in 10. Monzon is the best 160 fighter in history imo.
My initial thought was Monzon, simply because he is definitely top 5 ever at MW. But this really is a difficult matchup for him. Hearns could give him a lot of problems. But inevitably, Monzon wins it. Too complete a fighter at MW for anyone really, except SRR and maybe Hagler. I could see Hearns taking one out of three against Monzon though.
Monzon had the same characteristics as Hagler Mentally very strong Great chin Great Stamina Very Durable Strong as bull Solid punching power Monzon would start slow but his body punches would slowly wear down Hearns Monzon by 12th rd tko.
Agree with the consensus...I think Hearns would take the lead, superior speed and power would be evident...But Monzon's physicality and IQ would tell the difference. Monzon late stoppage. ATG middleweight, maybe the best middleweight ever.
Interesting. How does the battle of the jabs play out in this one? Can Monzon block or parry it effectively enough?
Monzon, cool and patient as ever, weathers any and all of Hearns' efforts, abruptly takes over by the 4th and ko's Hearns in the 7th. Monzon was, as I've always maintained, the best middleweight champion of history.
Its 100% for Carlos, here also no matter how many gymnastics I mentally try for Tommy. It would be interesting though if Hearns came out ready for Bear and was able to nail Monzon several times with his right hand, Old man Griffith was able to time Carlos again and again in their second go with his even with his speed gone. Stunned or not Carlos was just too strong and consistent and would eventually wear down and stop Tommy.
I suppose Hearns would have a puncher's chance against anybody, but imho the consensus view is correct, based on the few vids I have seen of Monzon. I don't think Hearns has the constitution to go 12 with Carlos, and I think Monzon is tough enough and defensively savvy enough to survive the early storm. Monzon late stoppage / UD.
