There would be a early battle of the jabs but Carlos in this to strong, to rugged for Tommy. Early first few rounds are hearns best but monzon never falls far behind. By the tenth Carlos is in command and batters hearns to the canvas.
When Carlos is able to line up his own right I honestly don't think Tommy Hearns would react well to it. He may take a few but it would have a great effect on him. I see Hearns jab landing though and It is a fascinating picture in my mind to watch these guys trade shots from the outside. It would be next level stuff.
I think Tommy is getting slighted badly here. Monzon has never fought anyone with the speed, size, reach and punch of Hearns. Monzon was very sturdy, but he could be hurt bad as Briscoe demonstrated. Other than Briscoe's durability, Hearns was superior in every way. Monzon, although great, gets overrated IMO. Especially when he gets called the greatest MW of all time.
I think the matter in question here is not so much the quality of Monzon's chin, but that of Hearns'. I don't think he has the durability to win a long fight with Monzon. His best bet would be to try overwhelm Carlos early and decisively.
I go with the consensus here. Monzon overhauls any early points deficit and stops The Hitman after the halfway mark. Carlos simply too tough and durable for Hearns at 160lbs.
Hearns has the power to crack great chins. Therefore Monzon the quality of Monzon's against Hearn's power should be considered. He's been staggered before and almost ko'd. Hearns was a very skilled offensive fighter.
I agree that Hearns had the required power. I'm just not convinced that it would be enough against a killer like Monzon. But if I had to pick a guy to KO Monzon, Hearns would be on that short list.
If Monzon is 100% serious he KOs Hearns in 5 to 7 rounds. That's not as quickly as Hagler and Barkeley did it but Monzon would be far less desperate in his approach.
Does anybody think Tommy could go 10 tough rounds with any top middleweight? He gets laid out inside 8
I think Hearns would severely test Monzon at some point very early on. Odds are Monzon would survive and get home later on.
I think so as well, Hearns isn't a walk in the park for anyone at middleweight...Hearns actually did well against jabbing boxing styles...but with that said, I think Monzon would come on late...
