Carlos Monzon's resume

Monzon is (in my opinion, rightly) regarded as one of the greatest fighters of the last 40 years.

However, a friend of mine strongly disagrees with how highly I rate him, so we thought we'd put the debate to the forum.

My friend's view is that Monzon does not have multi-weight success to his name AND doesn't have exceptional longevity (7 years at the top level), and his resume is strong but not strong enough to merit his lofty position in boxing history.

I personally think that the wins over Griffith and Valdez were great, and that the wins over Benvenuti, Napoles, and other solid mw's like Mundine and Briscoe mean that he has one of the best mw win resumes of all-time, in addition to his masterful reign as champion and his long, long unbeaten run.

Which side of the fence are you on here? :bbb

Who is your mate? Multi weight success means very little to my criteria.

He's not a member of this site, a member of a different (and in my opinion vastly inferior) combat sports forum. Poor fellow.

PS: I hope I don't cause a storm by classifying Roberto Duran as having a 'very good' rather than a 'great' resume here. Please don't take the wording too literally, I just mean that on a scale, Duran's res would be on the level below Charles's. I'm a huge fan and defender of Duran, but I think it's fair to say that a resume like Charles's is on a different level in terms of the variety of great fighters beaten?

Multi weight success is a great way for a fighter to improve their greatness. Sheer dominance of a division with great wins is just as valid in a claim to greatness.

Monzons resume, in my opinion , is the strongest MW resume of all time.

Take a look at the circumstance of his 3 losses.

Antonio Aguilar- Went on to build up a resume of 79-18-11. He was 16-0 at the time, Monzon was 8-0. The fight took place in Aguilars home town and many people claimed Monzon done enough to win that fight, although it was apparently close.

Felipe Cambeiro- Again fighting in his home town, put Monzon down 3 times, again it has been argued that Monzon won enough rounds to take victory.

Alberto Massi- Yet again fighting in his home town and yet again many argued Monzon won the fight.

At this point Monzon was 16-3 and would continue his career without defeat.

Of Monzons draws how many were gifted to the other man due to home town decision.

All of these men claimed a draw with Monzon in their own home town.

    Celedonio Lima
    Andres Antonio Selpa
    Emilio Ale Ali
    Manoel Severinox2
    Juan Aguilar
Carlos Alberto Salinas- Although not his home town the fight was in his place of birth.

After that an all win run of 31 fights.

His wins from 1970 to 1977 are astounding. Dominating some of the greatest fighters of his generation in Benvenuti, Griffith, Bouttier, Napoles and Valdez as well as beating top fighters dotted between them.

His dominating style and ability to control the pace and range of a fight make him not only a lock on as one of the greatest MWs of all time but as one of the greatest fighters to ever step in the ring.

There's a massive gulf between 'good' and 'decent' on your resume ratings there Pop.

In any case, I'd say Monzon's resume is somewhere between 'good' and 'very good'.

Added to his level of dominance, it makes for a genuinely great fighter.

Certainly better than Erik Morales but no way on a par with Duran. I don't like your poll.

Who are the 'many' that have argued Monzon won these fights?

Agreed with the others that it's somewhere between good and very good. A better resume than Morales' but not as good as Duran's.

In terms of competition I don't think it's much better than Morales but obviously he's more dominant, thus greater. What you have to remember is Griffith was 33/34, Napoles 34, Benvenuti 32/33 (correct me if I'm wrong on those numbers as I'm working from memory). Napoles started at LW and made 136 as a 28yo (again from recollection, correct me if I'm wrong) and only moved to WW to get big fights, this would be his only career fight above 147. Griffith and Benvenuti while successful at MW are only really 154lbers.

His win over his great rival in Valdes is an excellent one, maybe his best, but how high do we rate Valdes? How high do we rate Mundine, Briscoe? I think all are very good contenders but none real great ones. Could you argue 1 of them would be great if he wasn't around? I don't think so, I think Benvenuti/Griffith, would have been bumped off by a young upstart and the MW championship would have been passed back and forth

Monzon dominated these for 7years until he was 35, but he'll be 1 of those who will go down as never beating a great in their prime

He was clearly the best middle ever and an all time great fighter. He gets criticised by those who don't like his calculating, unemotional style. Monzon could get the job done against anybody. I guess he was too successful for some.

His opposition was at least very good.

 I thought I'd done quite a good job of a 1-6 resume quality scale. I invite the critics to come up with a better 1-6! Seriously, would be good to see a better one as this is something I've struggled to do in the past as well.
