Carlos Ortiz ability wise

    Jack of all trades. Not particularly exceptional in any area, apart from one - being good at everything. I think if you were going to rate his attributes one by one he'd score a 7.5 to 8.5 in everything.

    Jabbing, inside fighting, footwork, combination punching, durability, work rate, power, speed, body punching, intelligence... Educated all round. A very textbook fighter, and in my opinion, the closest resemblance to Joe Louis - but balanced out.

    Being a jack of all trades should in no way be seen as a bad thing, but it certainly makes fantasy fights hard to figure out. Always thought this, because it seems nobody has anything to expose him with.

    Thoughts?

    Versatility has to be a 10

    Pity we never got Napoles-Ortiz at 135 or 140. Does anyone know if there is any Loche-Ortiz footage knocking around?

    I thought I'd seen it before but was confused if I was mixed up. Didn't ring reports say Ortiz got the better of it? From that very brief footage Loche is landing the cleaner punches, limited that it is

    If someone wanted to know what an all-rounder looked like you'd show 'em Ortiz.A lock for the top 5 at 135 IMO.

    Yeah, I think so too, Flea. Not quite up there with Leonard, Gans and Duran though. One of the overlooked or ignored greats IMO.

    He can be overlooked, maybe because he wasn't incredible at any one thing. But you soon realise you've missed him out, go :patsch and reaffirm your lofty rank of him.

    An ace fighter was Ortiz. Not a big puncher of course, but blended his attributes so well and persisted with his offence, could break his man down behind the jab and finish with a variety of punches. He also beat Elorde down impressively in the footage I've seen of their second fight.

    That's ****ing horrible to watch though, a fighter who can't or won't lift his hands and isn't punching back getting his head treated like a speedball. That kid was inexperienced if I remember rightly and it shows. If I was reffing that I'd have stepped in earlier after telling the opponent he has to punch back. That PR style of putting punches together is impressive though

    Count the punches thrown in that finish. Astonishing amount and Ortiz didn't even tire. Terrific way in which he finished off Battling Torres as well.

    Len Matthews was marketed as the new Ray Robinson. Unfortunately with that kind of press he was also thrown to the wolves early.

    One of the most brutal stoppages ever.

    Another thing worth mentioning about Ortiz is he was physically monstrous at 135.A real tank who i'm surprised was able to make the weight for so long.
