    Ortiz from earlier this year. Looks his age but still seems quite alert and spry.

    The TCM documentary 'The Taxi Driver....Conversation with a Champ' from 1988. Ortiz talks about Joe Brown, Duran, his drinking and gambling problems amongst other things. Good to know that he's managed to come through it all and has found some peace and stability in old age.

    Interestingly honest how he puts no stock in the LWW title at the time, seeing how a lot of fighters are usually quick to defend baubles and straps these days (well, in those days too I suppose). I'd like to know what he thought of another great fighter in Loi.....

    Have you read 'The Arc of Boxing' Ribs? Ortiz spouts off a lot in that.

    Excellent Tin-Ribs,

    Great guy Carlos Ortiz,

    Waited 3-years to get a Lightweight Championship bout.

    The 25 1/2 year-old did not disappoint, and self-managed too.

    Fight Purse, of $21,000 in April 1962 - which was not bad for a Challenger.

    So I've heard. I bought it and put it on my 'to read' list but ended up lending it to someone before I could read it - lo and behold, they lost it. :twisted: And I don't seem to have got round to buying it again. Any good Flea? Silver seems like he knows his stuff but I can imagine a lot of modern fans making him out - perhaps rightly - to be biased.

    It's very biased, a lot of the 'opinion' stuff I didn't agree with. The stats make it a worthy read.

    Why the **** you'd lend that out I don't know. Shank that person for losing it, smash 'em to bits.

    I'm soft that way plus I really trusted the kid I lent it to, he's a good mate. He paid me back for losing it in the end after I'd given him a verbal fist**** in front of everyone and hadn't spoken to him for a month.

    Ortiz comes across as a bit of a tool then does he? I read something about him laying out a plan for beating Mayweather, which I suspect he would've been able to do.

    Edit: Tbh, he could be as much of a tool as he likes. I still enjoy watching him as much as anyone I've ever watched.

    It's understandable. And while Duran's lightweight era wasn't superb, Ortiz basically says 'he would've been a contender in my day and not amounted to much'.

    That was too much to stomach. EDIT: even if I do think Ortiz would beat Duran :D

    'Skeeter' McClure's in there as well.

    Well worth a read and glad you got the money back.

    Early Carlos Ortiz,

    Turned professional in February 1955, as an 18 1/2 year-old.

    Was 'first' managed by Ed Ferguson

    Later became 'self-managed' in 1959, after getting disgruntled without making
    any decent money.

    By February 1961, after a 7 year-run, the 25 1/2 year-old, and #1 Lightweight
    with a record of 35-4-0 (13 KO') gets a World Lightweight Championship bout,
    with Joe Brown, only after having a 'closed door meeting' with Joe Brown's Manager -
    Lou Viscusi.

    Two-months later,,,,,,, 'Shazam'

    Ahhhhh,,,,,,,,,,The Good Old Days.

    Great fighter! In my opinion he's underrated; among Puerto Ricans, Boxing Historians, pretty much in general.

    Trinidad over Ortiz? Ha!
