GREAT, GREAT, GREAT matchup. I go back and forth on this one all time. But on his best day, I think Ortiz beats Chavez. He had the skill and superb ring IQ to outbox Chavez, and the toughness to hang in when Chavez makes his inevitable late round surge. Ortiz had great stamina himself, and like Chavez got stronger over the course of the fight.

And whilst Chavez is known as one of the greatest body punchers of all time, it should be noted that Ortiz is also one of the greatest body punchers of all time.

Once again, great matchup, but I think Ortiz's superior versatility wins him a close decision.

Ortiz was an awesome fighter, and to be honest, the only two lightweights I'd pick over him with confidence are Duran and Whitaker.

Chavez would usually impose his physicality on opponents, that coupled with his great technical skill is what made him truly formidable. The problem here is that Ortiz, also had high end technique. I don't see Chavez bullying Ortiz, who was also very physical and much more powerfully built than Chavez. I think this is one hell of a matchup and one that has always intrigued me. I would like to hear the boxing savants intelligently break this one down and of course I am talking Ortiz and Chavez at their absolute best at 135.

    This is a great match-up..Two ATG's.
I think this is very close, and the pair would have probably fought a series of fights...they both do everything well. I lean towards Ortiz being better from the outside, Chavez being better in close. I think JCC would take this by close decision, IMO he takes a better punch, and would force the action inside where he would have a slight edge in crowding Ortiz and getting beneath him to leverage body shots. I think Chavez's aggression would carry the cards in a tight, and very technical fight in the inside.

Carlos Ortiz was the uncrowned lightweight champion for years. How Joe Brown was persistently allowed to dodge him amazed me. Eventually he pinned him down and outclassed Old Bones to win the title. My view is that he had too much talent in every department for Chavez to cope with.

We're in the classic sub-forum, why even ask the question? We all know the older fighters were better and would defeat God by tko in the 3rd. This forum is comedy when it c limes to over rating fighters of old.

Chavez annihilates him btw. Ortiz threw looping slow punches.

It has nothing to do with eras, you brain dead simp.

Both are awesome, top 10 all time lightweights, and it'd be a close fight either way.

Ortiz would probably edge in, but saying it's a one sided fight for Chavez is just a STUPID thing to say and leads me to believe either 1. You've seen fights of a prime Ortiz or 2. You're just an idiot.

Have only watched what's on youtube. I'm not that old. Chill with the insults. LOL it isn't that serious. I believe Chavez was tougher and would grind out a victory. Ortiz seemed too slow to bother Chavez. Which was what he always had trouble with.
