CBS-Sports Announcers; Tom Brookshier and Jerry Quarry reported that Everaldo Costa Acevedo was 'unbeaten' in
his last '15' bouts.

In truth, Everaldo had lost his last bout, a 10-Round Decision Loss to (#5 WBA) Pedro Rojas (Venezuela) on July 24, 1977
(7-weeks earlier) in Caracas, Venezuela.

CBS also stated, that Everaldo had '19' Draws, instead of the '26' that were listed on his record.

Also, CBS reported that Everaldo Costa Acevedo had '30' knockouts, instead of the '17' that were listed on his record.

CBS was informed that Everaldo was a 'counter-puncher and a runner', yet he took it to Carlos Palomino, and beat him
to the punch time and again over the first '5' Rounds.

'My Card' thru 10-Rounds, Everaldo Costa Acevedo was ahead 100-94 (6-0-4 in Rounds).

Gil Clancy had Everaldo Costa Acevedo ahead 99-95 (5-1-4 in Rounds)

Everaldo was 'beating' Carlos to the punch, and out-hitting him 3 to 1. Everaldo had landed several good sharp
right hand lead 'sucker punches'. Carlos was 'frustrated', and was unable to mount any sustained offense, and
was limited to 'one-punch' at a time to the body.

Everaldo proved he was a good mover, and a technical boxer who could frutrate anybody.

After the 9th Round, Palomino's corner was 'very concerned'.

At the opening of Round 10, Everaldo Costa Acevedo 'nailed' Carlos with another
big right hand lead 'sucker punch', and then continued to 'baffle' the Champion with
his 'in-and-out' movement, double left jabs, and inside clinching.

The 'light-hitting' veteran was fighting a 'smart fight'.

Ringside Announcer, Chico Vejar after 10-Rounds, had Everaldo way ahead on his scorecard.

As a matter of fact, the 'first' round he scored for Carlos Palomino was the 11th Round.

 

And Ruben Castillo started out as a 120 lb. fighter.

I think he ate himself, and is now a 240 lb. 'floatation device'.

28 year-old Carlos Palomino will be making the '4th Defense' of his Championship Belt,
3-months after his 'disappointing' performance versus the 'crafty' 33 year-old, Everaldo Costa Acevedo.

Jose Palacios, a 31 year-old Mexican Welterweight, has been a 'fringe contender' for the
past '3-years'. After winning his first '21-bouts', Jose has gone 13-7-1 (8 KO's) in his last '21-bouts'.
Jose is a 'straight-ahead brawler' who throws hard right hands. At times he can be tough, but he
throws wide punches, and leaves himself open for counter-punches.

The 5' 6 1/2" 'brawler-slugger' scored a 'major upset' on August 16, 1977 - when he defeated
(W Split-Dec 10) #1 WBC-ranked Armando Muniz, at The Olympic Auditorium on the
undercard of the * Pipino Cuevas vs. (#2) Clyde Gray 'WBA Welterweight Championship' bout.

Though details of his exact record are 'sketchy', but Jose Palacios is still a 'tough hombre' who
can be a rough opponent for anyone.

But, many consider Jose Palacios, as nothing more than 'a fighter in the right place at the right time',
and the benefit of a 'luxury rating' based upon his only significant win in '6-years', when he defeated
(W Split-Dec 10) over Armando Muniz in August 1977.

Carlos Palomino retained his WBC Welterweight Championship for the '4th' time, with a
vicious over-hand right in the 13th round landed on 31 year-old Mexican Welterweight
Jose Palacios.

The 28 year-old Palomino scored a 'knockdown' in the 13th Round, as Jose Palacios
was unable to rise after getting floored by the Champion.

Referee John Thomas counted out the #9 WBC-ranked Challenger at 1:21 of the 13th Round.
The Champion controlled most of the early rounds against the slow-moving brawler, and built
up a large points lead thru '7' Rounds.

Jose Palacios did turn the bout in his favor in Rounds 8 and 9, and stunned the Champion
at the end of Round 10, giving the Champion some anxious moments.

In Rounds 11 and 12, the tough Mexican battled the Champion on even terms, making
a few of Palomino's handlers worried.

In the 13th Round, both fighters took turns landing hard shots, and then just as Palacios
was attempting a right-hand, the Champion beat the Challenger to the punch with a
vicious overhand right to the chin, flooring the Mexican for the 'full-count'.

Jose Palacios, the #9 WBC-ranked Challenger had earned a shot at the WBC Championship by defeating
the #1 WBC Challenger - Armando Muniz on August 16, 1977 (4-months earlier).

Saturday Afternoon - February 11, 1978 (Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada)

WBC Welterweight Championship

The 28 1/2 year-old Champion will be making the '5th Defense' of his WBC
Championship Belt.

His opponent, will be the #1 WBC-ranked Challenger, Japan's Ryu Sorimachi.

The 30 1/2 year-old Ryu, will be attempting his '3rd' try at a World Championship.
He lost a Majority 15-Round Decision to World Light-Middleweight Champion - Koichi Wajima
in April 1973, and he lost by (L KO 7) to Oscar Albarado in October 1974, which was also
for the World Light-Middleweight Championship.

Ryu, is a strong broad-shouldered 5' 10 1/2" boxer-puncher. Ryu has good right-hand power, and is
also a good counter-puncher. Sorimachi currently holds the OPBF Welterweight Championship, and is
undefeated in his last '11' bouts, going 9-0-2 (3 KO's). His last loss was in October 1974 to
Oscar Albarado (3 years and 4 months) ago.

The Fight

Round 1
Ryu Sorimachi makes it easy for Carlos, as he stays right in front of him, looking to land 'one' power shot.
Carlos scores with left jabs, and standard 1-2 combinations. Sorimachi presses, but is not throwing punches,
as he is looking for an opening. Carlos is doing a 'wormanlike job'. At the 2:31 Mark, the stalking Ryu lands a
real hard left uppercut while pushing Carlos back into the ropes.

Round 1 for Carlos Palomino.

Round 2
Ryu Sorimachi presses, but this time opens up, and lands a hard overhand right at the 0:16 Mark, and follows
up with another hard overhand right. Ryu is having a better time stalking this round, as Carlos moves away.
Palomino does land several good left jabs and glancing rights in mid-round. At the 1:41 Mark, Sorimachi lands
a real hard right hand that makes Carlos hold. The last 1-Minute of the round, is fought on even terms.

Round 2 for Ryu Sorimachi.

Round 3
Carlos goes back to working with an assortment of left jabs and right hands. Sorimachi again is looking to
load up on 'one shot'. Carlos lands a good right at the 0:43 mark. Carlos starts to go aggressive, and scores
with a good left hook, and follows up with a 6-punch flurry. Sorimachi turns aggressor, and scores with a good
left uppercut at the 1:10 Mark. Palomino goes back to the left jab, and straight right, and has success.
At the 2:16 Mark, Sorimachi again scores with a hard left uppercut that drives Palomino to the ropes,
where he clinches. Both fighters jab and counter over the last 45-seconds.

Round 3 for Carlos Palomino.

Round 4
Both fighters go toe-to-toe'. At the 0:09 Mark, Carlos lands a good hard left hook. Both fighters exchange
good shots. At the 0:45 Mark, Carlos lands a good left hook to the jaw, and Ryu backs up for the 'first time' in the bout.
Carlos pins Sorimachi on the ropes, where he scores with a high-volume of body punches. Sorimachi gets off the
ropes, but Palomino drives him back into the corrner with hard left hooks to the body.

At the 1:45 Mark, Ryu is able to spin out, and push Carlos away. At the 1:50 Mark, Sorimachi lands the 'best punch'
of the fight, a wicked overhand right that stuns Palomino. As Palomino backs up, Ryu lands a tremendous left
uppercut that shakes Palomino, as he wobbles to the ropes. As Ryu moves in, Palomino shows his recuperative powers,
and fires back with hard left-rights to the body. At the 2:05 Mark, Palomino lands a hard 1-2 that freezes Sorimachi.
Carlos fires a quick volley, then lands a good right hand at the 2:21 Mark. Ryu falls back into the 'neutral corner' and
appears hurt. Carlos moves in, and fires a '5-punch' combination, but Sorimachi finds the strength to come back with
his own '4-punch' flurry. Carlos pushes Ryu back into the ropes, and lands '3' good body punches as the bell ends
Round 4.

Round 4 for Carlos Palomino.

Round 5
Ryu Sorimachi presses, but is not firing punches. Carlos is shooting out straight left-rights, and is scoring.
At the 0:53 mark, Carlos lands a good right hand to the jaw, that backs Ryu to the ropes. Carlos is scoring with
good left jabs and straight right hands. Sorimachi fires back on occassion, but does not land anything heavy.
Ryu is trying to rest, and load-up for one big punch. Carlos continues to work at a steady pace, and controls
the round.

Round 5 for Carlos Palomino.

Round 6
Both fighters meet at center-ring. Carlos is the more effective aggressor, and lands a good right hand to the body
at the 0:53 Mark. Sorimachi backs up the ropes to recover. Carlos moves in, and fires inside shots to try to bring
Ryu's hands down. While leaning on the ropes, Ryu is 'playing Possum', and shoots a wicked right uppercut at the 0:58 Mark
that stuns Palomino. Ryus then fires a '3-punch' follow-up. For the next 30-seconds, Ryu is on control. Carlos recovers,
and starts to fire back. At the 2:00 Mark, Carlos lands a good left hook to the body. Ryu is hurt and goes back to the
ropes. Carlos lands a good right-left at the 2:34 Mark, and a follow-up right at the 2:37 Mark.

Carlos keeps Ryu pinned on the ropes, and pounds away at Sorimachi's body as the the round ends. Ryu is bent over
at the bell, and walks back to his corner holding his sides.

Round 6 for Carlos Palomino.

Round 7
Suprisingly, Ryu comes out fast, and meets Carlos at center-ring, where he fires punches. But Carlos pauses, then
fires right back with a heavy body barrage. Carlos is in complete control, as his punches are now moving Ryu.
Carlos backs up Sorimachi with a '3-punch' combination, and forces him out of position, then at the 1:51 Mark, Carlos
lands a straight right and a booming left hook to the jaw, that puts Ryu Sorimachi down and out at 2:03 of Round 7.
