I often see him listed among Duran's best wins, so I'm curious... Was Palomino a great fighter?

The video posted here recently of his beatiful stoppage over Stracey has gotten me a bit interested in him.

I also find it funny he came back to the ring after 20 years off and strung together a few wins before retiring again. :yikes

He was a very good fighter..short of great though, perhaps like Cokes in that respect.

He showed his class and resilience against Roberto and Wilfred..Mantequilla reckons, and I agree, that he was one of those rare fighters to retire at the peak of their powers..his first retirement I mean.

He was an excellent fighter, just not quite good enough to get his shine in that tremendous era he fought in. I'd put him on the same level as Trinidad, who I don't feel would've been any more successful in that era than Palomino was. I'd say Carlos was the more skilled of the two, with Tito being a bigger puncher.

If he had beaten Cuevas....then I would move him into lower-tier great.

A Hall-Of-Famer to be sure, but not an ATG. Good fighter, had one heck of a chin.

Yep, an excellent fighter, just short of a great. I can't see him beating many great welterweights when they are in top form but I can't see him being disgraced by too many either.

I thought he beat Hedgemon Lewis, looked very good in his fights with Muniz and Stracey, and I had him going down by a single point to Wilfred Benitez. Wilfred always seemed to be in control, but Palomino's tenacity was keeping him in there. A lot have it much wider than that, but I thought it was a super close fight.

Palomino had a good chin and outstanding stamina and if you turned up slightly out of shape he would expose you. Could see him beating the DLH that faced Ike Quartey, for instance.

Battered Stracey, especially in the last round. Durable but not exactly amazing, I remember his toughness and chin more than anything. Not a great WW H2H, but only my opinion.

No.I would say a very good fighter ,but not great, then again to me the word is grossly overused.

his left hook was that of an ATG.it was one of the best hooks,to body and head that i've seen.
the era he boxed in was full of talent but i'd agree that he was a bit short of the very best status.

I think people are selling his skills a bit short here. He had a good jab, he could counter, had good boxing instincts, and one of the most brutal left hooks you'll see. I thought he held his own with Benitez in the center of the ring for the most part in their bout, fighting Benitez's fight. He showed his toughness and resolve against Duran in their bout when, aside from a knockdown late, he never seemed hurt by Duran at all despite the punishment he was taking. I think he'd match up well with the majority of the Welterweights to have come along since his era.

How do people think he'd do against the likes of Cotto, Mosley, Berto (obvious answer-Palamino K.O within five rounds, no way could Berto take his left) Clottey, and to a lesser extent, Paul Williams and Margarito (as they've recently left)???

Even as a massive Cotto fan..I say Carlos wears him down. Miguel wont be able to hurt him in the long run and I think he just wouldnt able to deal with Palomino constantly in his face.

Prime Mosley could eek it out here...He would have a hard time with the skills and body attack of Carlos, but Im not sure Carlos has the power to put the hurt on Shane. I think a pre-forrest Shane, who actually still threw combinatons, has the confidence to flurry enough rounds to a 8-4 victory..I wouldnt be confident in that pick though.

He stops Berto and outworks Clottey.

He easily outpoints Margarito...Williams is a difficult style but Im still not all that sold on him. If Quintana can outbox and at times beat him up, and Margarito can come within a whisker of beating him..then Carlos should be able to do that aswell..Paul is really just big and throws a lot of punches. I see Carlos working him out and really having his way with him late.

Mosley was sure as hell firing combinations off Margarito's dome.
