These were my 2 favorite fighters in the '70's. There was talk of a dream match between the 2 of them but unfortunately, it never came about. They had many similarities including:

    1. Both were Mexican born.
    2. Both were virtual unknowns when they fought for the titles as big underdog.
    4. Each man won his title in 1976 and lost their titles respectively in 1979 and 1980.
    5. Each was known for a devastating left hook.

This thread is focused on the left hook, not on who was the better fighter/champion. Each man has a strong case.

Carlos was known for a devastating body attack, particularly his left hook to the liver, which destroyed John Stracey. Carlos could also deliver a KO to the chops as well. Years before SRL did it, Carlos KO'd Dave "Boy" Green with a picture perfect left hook. Green was out cold for several minutes.

Pipino was best known for a crushing, sledgehammer hook. Billy Backus compared it to a sack of rocks. His hooks often took a terrible toll on a man's face, sometimes breaking bones or blood vessels, as with Angel Espada, Harold Weston and Backus.

So, who had the more devastating hook? This was a tough one for me. After much thinking, I have to go with Pipino. I'd rather be knocked out cold than to have my face broken. And Pipino had that kind of power.

Cuevas, who has an argument as the hardest hitter ever at WW.

I think Palmino was the better overall fighter, though, just.

Carlos may have been a bit more well-rounded but I think I’d favor Pipino H2H. Both really fun fighters to watch and a cut above.

As for power, yes, it’s Pipino all the way. He was the original bonecrusher.

Would have been a great match-up.

Palomino on points or late stoppage but unquestionably Pipino carried more power in his wrecking ball hook.

Never forget the way he crushed Angel Espada in their first match, just brutal.

You left out #3, which was likely, "They both lost to Andy Price before winning the title."

With one punch, Cuevas. Palomino typically wore/broke down his opponents over several rounds, whereas Cuevas frequently blasted out opponents early.

Palamino was the overall better fighter, but Pipino had wrecking ball, bone breaking power. I'd say with both at their peaks Carlos would have a hard time avoiding Cuevas for 15 rounds. He might, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Not a lot of Welters that had a better hook than Cuevas.

Cuevas was a much bigger puncher.

Cuevas by an absolute miles, and then some. His left hook is in thew convo for hardest punch in welter history. Hearns, SRR, Cuevas and Trinidad are usually considered the four hardest punchers at 147 ever.

Yup, I did leave out #3. Good catch there. Anyway, I suppose #6 could be that they both were beaten by Duran after they were dethroned as champs and were on the downslide. Interesting in that so far Pipino is pitching a shutout in the poll. Pretty clear consensus here that he was the most devastating puncher.

Piping hit harder IMHO. But I think prime for prime, Carlos takes Pipino in the actual fight.

    Cuevas of course.

Would’ve been interesting to see Palomino catch the vaunted left hook and see how he coped with it.

Personally, I think he would’ve coped. Besides his skills, Carlos was one tough hombre.

Even Duran afforded Palomino the accolade of being the toughest opponent he ever faced.

When Carlos was made privy to Roberto’s sentiments, suffice to say, he was extremely chuffed by Roberto’s heady compliment.

Even when they deserved it, there weren’t many opponents who gained Duran’s expressed respect. Lol.
