Palomino was hyped up for a tremendous confrontation with Duran, but El Cholo, a master of mind games, disarmed him when they met by cordially shaking his hand and asking Carlos for an autograph for his son. A news photograph of the weigh in showed Palomino on the scales while Roberto, drink in hand, was beaming a relaxed smile. Duran showed himself to be about much more than fiery intensity, and took nine of the ten rounds, just as he took nine of the first ten in Montreal.
For those of us who remember. The Duran win over Palomino was even greater because we didn't know how Duran was going to perform up at welter, this was his first real test and he was just on another level. I've wondered before what would of happened if he'd moved up earlier.
Duran and Carlos had mutual respect for each other. After the fight was over...Duran advised Palomino to quit...told him "You just don't have it anymore".
Carlos Palomino,,, Greatest Fights Not including; Wilfred Benetiz (L Dec 15) Roberto Duran (L Dec 10) John H. Stracey Armando Muniz I Armando Muniz II Davey Boy Green Zovek Barajas II Ryu Sorimachi Jose Palacios Hedgeman Lewis Zovek Barajas I Andy Price
Palimino had a good set of whiskers himself. Too bad him and Pipino Cuevas never fought for a unified title. (Cuevas, hardest hitter in the universe IMO) It'd be nice to see if Palimino could have held up to Cuevas sledgehammers.
I recall reading another Palomino quote from after the fight when he said "I'am retiring!! Where can i go with that animal around"!!:yep
Must say i am surprised that Andy Price gets Several mentions in the "Boxing" Skills categories and Speedster Hedgeman Lewis gets no Mention, Hedge Held a More Mature Carlos to a draw than the young Pro that Price fought.
I love King Carlos,,,,,,but he definitely lost the first bout to Zovek Barajas (Draw 10). Has anybody seen his fight with Andy Price. The little that I have read, is that Andy had Carlos in all sorts of trouble.
