Thanks! I could very well be totally wrong! You are talking to the guy who was convinced Royce Gracie was going to beat Matt Hughes. Palomino was a very impressive fighter and personality...Im very open minded to the fact he breaks down Lloyd....plus I confess my biases ...Honeyghan is my favourite fighter ever!
And I think that is cool, he sure did beat Donald Curry on that night in Sept 1986. It would have been great to see him have a longer title reign, he was a very hungry fighter and champion. Lloyd Honeyghan had the potential to be a great champion.
The percentage call is Palomino. Two fighters in a fairly similar position on the Welterweight listings, and yet Carlos was ridiculously consistent, and Honeyghan, even in his pomp, was frustratingly inconsistent. Lloyd at his best wins, and also at his second and third best too. But too often he was not at them levels, hence my call.
Lloyd Honeyghan gets absurdly overrated on this forum. He gets a bit underrated on other forums, but he's always been insanely overrated on Eastside.
Palomino too solid for Lloyd, and I am a big fan of the Ragamuffin Man. Sadly I go back long enough to have seen Lloyd beating big banger Joey Frost (Lloyd on the deck more than once) in the ABAs and I remember being at the Royal Albert Hall for his pro debut. Some strange things being said on this thread imo - mr.magoo stating that "both had questionable durability" not Palomino, surely? Also, Jamal P saying that Lloyd scored 1 punch kayoes over Yung-Kil Chung & Mickey Hughes - if memory serves Chung was stopped by a low blow and Lloyd was lucky not to be DQ'd & Hughes was stopped on a cut? I went to the second Vaca fight and although (if memory serves again) the final punch was a body shot, it was at the end of a long barrage of shots so not really a 1 punch KO like, say, the Rosi KO - which was excellent. I also spoke with the manager of Lloyd's opponent Roberto Mendez in June 84 & when I suggested to him that Lloyd would become world champion he looked at me as if I was stupid!!! I feel Carlos was experienced and composed enough not to get overwhelmed or flustered by Lloyd in the early going, probably losing most of the early rounds to Lloyd making sufficient investments in Lloyd's body during those early rounds to reap the benefits later on. The OP didn't say whether this was a 12 or 15 rounder. If a 12 rounder I reckon Palomino wins a close-ish decision. If 15, I suspect a painful stoppage between 13 to 15, in favour of Carlos.
I have to go with Carlos. Lloyd doesn't have an enormous amount of resume besides Curry and just how bad was curry that night? It's certainly up to individual interpretation. Palomino perhaps more proven for me and a little bit better fighter.
Peak Honeyghan to much man for Palomino. I must say I respect Palomino though. Very good fighter and champion.
What are you talking about resume? Honeyghan beat Curry, Shufford, Gilson, Mittee, Giafranco Rossi, Bumphus, Blocker, Mad Dog Hatcher, Chung, Darryl Tyson etc all world champions and contenders. Lost to Starling, Breland and Pazienza. Not a shabby resume by any stretch of imagination
Lloyd was beating Chung who was looking for a way out of the fight. Lloyd though past his best outclassed Hughes and in the 2nd Vaca fight he was a man possessed and overwhelmed him the final shot was a right hand from the south paw stance to the solar plexus. Loved it.
Jamal I think I may have treated you harshly in the past because anybody who likes Lloyd Honeyghan as his favourite fight ever is a top bloke in my book.
