The Palomino incarnation of 1976 who beat John H Stracey facing off against the McCrory who beat Colin Jones. My money's on Carlos' body attack gradually wearing down Milton and stopping him in the later rounds.
Hi Stevie. I am with you, Palomino would have to persistent for a rather thin and flaky McCrory, can see a late stoppage, or ref calls of Carlos, on point, I went to a gym in Carnaby St, sadly I went there in the 60s, and Palomino was preparing for the Green fight, what a treat it was, you have to be ringside, or fairly close, to fully appreciate the effect of his body punching, like all good body shots they made no noise, they didn't travel far, and most were on target, the execution was effortless, no strain or face pulling, just well planted vicious punches, that slowly weakened and slowed down many a challenger, but there was more to him than that, he was nearly always in range to throw his shots, but managed to avoid the sparring partners shots, his rather slowish movement covered up a think thinking boxing brain, he would close down the space in two steps, leaving no where for the hired help to move, once he spared for 10 rounds, and he looked as fresh in the tenth as the first, the most economical of boxers, lots of talk on here about underrated, well for me Palomino could be the poster boy. Stay safe buddy, always look out for your posts, polite and interesting, keep it up, chat soon.
I’m completely in agreement that the difference here is Carlos’ educated body attack. Palomino was a slow starter so I’d figure McCrory with his reach and long game to build an early lead but gets slowed by that steady body assault and doesn’t see the 11th imo. Once he’s softened up, Carlos does the damage upstairs with his left hook to end it.
Remember what Carlos Palomino did to John H. Stracey, the victor of the great Jose Mantequilla Napoles on Dec 6 1975, TKO 6. Palomino's steady body attack wore down Stracey late in the title bout to ensure Carlos the WBC Welterweight Title on June 22 1976 by TKO 12. Palomino started out late against challengers Armando Muniz and Davey Boy Green but came on with a steady body attack to stop both challengers. I see the same happening to tall lanky Milton McCrory, who begins fast sets the pace with his jab and movement, but Palomino's tenacity and vicious body attack takes the starch out of Milton, who by this time does not resemble a monster but a very tired fighter who begins to hang on in desperation. Palomino by TKO11.
Probably similar to McCallum vs McCrory with McCrory starting off reasonably well but eventually Palomino's body attack wears him down and stops McCrory somewhere around 10-11.
Mccrory had issues with the pressure Jones put on him, with Jones' actual offensive output being fairly minimal for half the fight. Palomino would punch more and take whatever Milton has for him early on. Palomino, late stoppage.
