Could well have happened. In 1977 the former was WBC champion and the latter WBA titleholder. Both men were very good champions. It was only due to the fact that they were around at the same time as greats such as Benitez,Duran,Hearns and Leonard that they were n't champions for longer. It is 1977 and Carlos faces off against Pipino for the unified championship. Carlos was the better all round boxer, imo, and Pipino the harder puncher. I see Palomino riding out some rocky moments before scoring a clear decision. Who have you got for this one?
I liked Mino. Loved the way he retired at the perfect time, he’s in great shape still and happy. He had a close one with Wilfred, lost to Duran and rode off into the sunset shamelessly. I think he’d win this one.
Palomino carries the day over Cuevas. Palomino was the real deal, good boxing skills, hard puncher (body & head)m excellent chin, consistent performer.
I used to think Cuevas would win but I think Palomino has the right ingredients to beat him. Should have happened. Would have been one to add to the pantheon of all Mexico wars.
Palomino would have too much of everything, too tough, too intelligent, what with his chin ( overlooked IMO when the polls come out ) and all round boxing ability, can see him punishing Cuevas at every turn, hurtful jab, coupled with a left hook to the body that truly left opponents doubled up, liked the way he stood in the pocket, trading shots, avoiding shots, and being utterly disdainful of the punches that did land. Over the years I have liked and admired " the punches, and the boxers " and when asked what is my fav style, it is very much the Palomino style that comes to the fore, sure we agree he was a very good champ, shame he just fell short of the likes of Napoles, Leonard, SRR, a dream matchup of mine when I am in the dentist chair is Basilio v Palomino , I wonder..... stay safe amigos.
I'll go with Palomino he'd be too durable even for the hard hitting Cuevas, i see Stracey, Green, Muniz. Throw the kitchen sink at Palomino and he stood firm. Plus i think he's better all round boxer with better technical skills than Cuevas, i see Palomino stopping Cuevas late after a competitive exciting fight.
Cuevas would whack him out, I'd bet. Palomino was pretty pedestrian in some of his title defenses and didn't have the pop to hurt prime Pipino. Carlos gets overrated to about the same degree that Pipino gets devalued on this forum. Kinda strange.
Cuevas by tko. although Carlos is a well rounded boxer, he is not going to get thru this untouched and after a few rounds of getting banged up, will begin to show the effects and further slow. Sensing the slowdown, Cuevas, with an almost unlimited reservoir of Marciano like stamina and crushing power, beats Carlos until he is literally black and blue Cuevas in 12
On paper Palomino has some of the tools to out point Pipino, If I had to bet I might take Cuevas to get Carlos outta there while behind on the cards around the 10th round give or take.
Tough one to call. Though Palomino had a much better skill set, Cuevas had possibly the greatest equalizer in boxing history. Also Palomino wasn't a defensive savant , he took a lot a shots clean though he had a great chin. But so did many of Cuevas's victims. A gun to my head, I'll lean slightly to Palomino weathering the storm and slowly grinding Cuevas down, stopping him late . But I wouldn't be shocked at all if Cuevas brutally ko'ed him with in 10rds. They are that well matched. Either way, this is a fight that probably would ruin the both of them.
Cuevas is so underplayed here. Palomino, as solid and good as he was, was fairly slow, there to be hit, and a slow starter. Cuevas takes this, and fairly early. Not because he was THAT much better than Carlos, it's just a terrible style for Palomino.
