Who would have won if both Carlos Palomino and Pipino Cuevas faced each other during their primes? Thanks.
Carlos' body shots would give Pipino hell. And his chin would hold up. He would outbox Pipino for the win.
Tough one. I lean to Palomino. Both fighters actually came along at the wrong time to be a welter. Some of the greatest fighters in history were prowling around the division. Benitez, Hearns Duran, and Leonard. Plus, a good group of contenders like Ranzany, Sheilds, and Viuret. Palomino was a more complete fighter. Well schooled, a vicious body attack , tough as nails with a great chin... Cuevas had possibly the greatest equalizer in welter history in his left hook. Cuevas broke eye sockets, jaws, and ribs with his hook, leaving a good list of contenders wreaked in his wake. Cuevas probably would come into this fight as the favorite. But Palomino's better all around skills, and chin would get him a dec in a mild upset.
I'd go with Palomino in this one. Cuevas was very crude and one-dimensional, but it was one hell of a dimension to be fair. Can't rule out the possibility that he stops Palomino, as Palomino was hittable. But he was also tough, had outstanding conditioning and was the much better all-round boxer here. Benitez and Duran showed that Palomino could be beaten if you out-sped or out-feinted him, but Cuevas isn't a classy enough boxer to do that. Cuevas was even shorter on defence than Palomino and would be leaving himself open to those withering body hooks that Palomino had in his arsenal. I think Palomino wins a decision going away. Although I don't rule out the possibility that he stops Cuevas late.
My answer remains Cuevas by stoppage. Palomino was very sound and a proven 15-round fighter but a slow starter who could be hit. Cuevas started like his hair was on fire and had more power than should be allowed by law. Bad mix there for Palomino.
Well, both Palomino and Cuevas did have relatively long reigns though. So perhaps they came at the right time! On the outcome of this fight, I'd agree with you. Palomino had a good chin, and he was a tough, physically imposing welterweight with under-rated skill sets. Cuevas could knock him out, I guess, but Palomino had never shown susceptibility to be one-punched. Palomino wins a decision or possibly knocks him out against the one-dimensional Cuevas.
True enough, though Palomino was decked briefly by an underwhelming puncher in Muniz. His chin wasn't iron necessarily. It would have to be in order to take the bombs Cuevas would deliver.
I honestly don’t know. It certainly took truly great fighters to beat either one of them when they were at their best. This would be a classic boxer vs puncher show down
This is truly one of the closest calls in welterweight history. Half of me thinks Palomino was too hittable and Cuevas would bang him out, while other half thinks Palomino could weather the storm and drown Cuevas late. 50-50, but gun to my head... I'd slightly favor Cuevas.
