Anyone seen this fight? I saw part it for the first time a few weeks ago..forgot to come on here and ask about it. My copy was missing the last 4 rounds...up until then it had been a good fight. How did the last 4 go down?
****in christ, what a fight! I'm surprised I've heard nothing about it till now, pretty damn entertaining. This content is protected
I remember seeing this fight in the early 90s, it was b/w, blurry and in French (don´t know French!) and I still loved it. Santos was a good boxer (makes Benitez easy win over him even more impressive) though unfortunately he´s remembered more for his disqualification loss to Don Curry. Medal was a good puncher, his fight with undefeated ko artis Earl Hargrove for the vacant IBF is another classic. After this fight he fought a peak Tommy Hearns and acquitted himself well in his final title fight. This content is protected
Santos did well to survive the last couple rounds. I remember it took Fight of The Year honors from one of the monthly boxing magazines at the time.
That one was pretty sweet, too, I watched it back to back with Santos/Medal. Looking at getting to Hardgrove Vs King next. I am also disappointed by how he's remembered, it's unfortunate how little is up of him fighting. It seems that even at the time commentators could see his speed and skills, but didn't see enough fights from him to be able to keep an eye on his career.
The fight was surprisingly dramatic for what seemed like a one sided affair. Medal didn't really know how to fight off Santos for most of the time, but when he turned it up he was able to throw some good punches and make Carlos head to the ropes. I have to wonder how good Medal's punches were compared to Drayton's, considering that they seemed to bother Santos more. Drayton couldn't really put a dent in there, but that is also due in some part to Carlos being pretty tough.
All three of these guys (Santos, Medal, Hargrove) are pretty fun! I've seen two from the each of the former and three of the latter so far, it's a shame that Earl wasn't in fighting shape against Mugabi, as I think that fight would've unfolded to be something great had he come in looking as good as he did against someone like King. Hargrove has the most fights up out of the bunch but I've also gotta see stuff like Curry/Santos and Hearns/Medal sometime.
I think that resulted from his two highest-profile fights, Benitez and Curry, being two of his worst efforts. Don't know if he consciously boxed within himself or he just picked some bad nights to have bad nights.
Just watched the Curry fight and yeah, it really looks like an under-performance from Santos compared to his fights against Medal or Drayton, very disappointing. It's odd how things work out that way, I wonder what would've happened had Carlos come in at his best against Curry, since he was still fighting quite competitively otherwise.
