I rate him highly at 130. Above the weight people seem to be equating trash talk, being black and having a boring style with greatness. There's a clear lack of depth to his game now and with waning athletic talents that often spells disaster against top-level operators in higher divisions.
I've always believed the Robinson performance's are overrated, that was'nt a prime Sugar Ray, Ray was 36 and 37 years old in them fights, after his 3 year lay off. This isn't a criticism of Basilio who is a great fighter, just them particular fights. His performance against Gavilan I can't fault, and is a good fight to use to show how good a fighter Carmen was.
It would be wrong to start ranking him as the GOAT because of it, but it was better than anything Floyd's ever achieved for instance. You could perhaps criticise his win over Robinson on that basis, but his performance in the second fight (against a Robinson who had rolled back the clock that night to what looked like a fighter at peak sharpness) despite having half his face caved in by an uppercut certainly showed what kind of skills (and toughness) he had.
No I'm not saying they not great performance's, because Ray was still world class, But it defiantly needs to be taken into account that Robinson was far, far away from his prime, thats why I say overrated, because they are sometimes are made out better than they actually were.
Well I regulary see it being brought up as one of best wins ever, which I don't believe is true, for the reason's I stated above. But they are some of most amazing showings ever of courage and willpower.
I can't see how Floyd can possibly prevail here. He's the smaller man, while Carmen is the natural WW. Basilio has a little too much of everything for Mayweather, who will struggle to go the distance...if he does.
I think Mayweather would win this one, slick technicians are kind of the kryptonite to Basilio's style. Floyd is just the more skilled boxer, although Basilio's insane conditioning and aggressiveness would keep it competitive.
@ Basilio outboxing Mayweather. Galivan was past prime against Basilio and he clearly outboxed him, Robinson was well past it too. A '06 Mayweather isn't at all far from prime, he's the better boxer, with the better defense, faster hands, better conditioning, and underrated strength. Basilio is a pressure fighter and its something mayweather has beaten countless times. I'm sure you'll cite the problems FMJ had with certain fighters but at the end of the day Basilio lost to allot worse fighters than Mayweather
I like Basilio big in this one, pressure and power takes its toll. Floyd may be able to last 12 but in a 15 I would lean with Basilio to stop FM...either way I like Basilio
Two embarassingl,y incorrect claims (but what would one expect from a "Felony" Mayweather nhuthugger?). I thought it could have gone either way and many felt Basilio edged (including GP). Gavilan was not past prime either, sharp as ever, coming to the end of his prime perhaps, but no more. Yes he is. The WW version of Floyd is underwhelming with flat slow feet and a predictable style. Mayweather is clearly past prime now also. The pressure mould has actually proven Mayweather's biggest foil, with less than distinguised opponents e.g. Chavez giving him a hard time and fighters with little skill and relying really on hustling tactics and strength beating him even at lower weights e.g. Castillo. I Well, fighting once a week well before your prime tends to do that do you.
Floyd is past prime but I wouldn't call him slow-footed or flat but he doesn't have the legs he used to. His footwork looked fine against Marquez & he didn't have to offer movement to Shane so he didn't. Then again, he did face Marquez in'09 but maybe he's declining but not slow-footed? No. Now you can say he's slow compared to how he was at lower weightclasses such as at lightweight but that's it.
