Both in their prime at welterweight would be interesting. I would expect most people to go with Griffith. However I wouldn't be surprised at a Basilio win with Carmen's tenacity.
I would go with Basilio in a close decision, although Emile did get the benefit in many close decisions. Would be a great fight.
If Carmen beat him it would be a close decision, and I wouldnt be surprised if Griffith would win an equally close rematch.
Perhaps, but Carman fought amazing battles with Demarco, Robinson and Galvian. I think Carman can gut out a points win here.
I think Basilio could possibly be a foil for Griffith's stand-up style, as Griffith wasn't really a pure boxer in a sense that he'd use the ring to avoid unneccessary contact. He'd get the better of the mid-ring exchanges, and his craftsmanship would make it difficult for Basilio to get off effective work early I'd think, but down the stretch I'm not sure Griffith could stay out of his clutches long enough to hold a points decision. Decision either way though, that's for sure, and a close one.
This is so close for me that I think I want to know what weight we are talking about. Both had good wins at Welter and at Middle. I tend to think Emile has a better frame to support 160 and favor him slightly there - I think I favor Carmen slightly at 147. Am I missing something guys?
These are both top 10 welters for me, yes Griffith is the more versatile, but i don't see the ability to adapt as being any sort of cryptonite here. Basilio as sharp with his shots, the bulk of which are not telegraphed. Griffith had faster hands, i see a lot of exchanges wether they be center ring or as a result of Carmen cutting off the ring/bullying his man. I tend to agree with Sweet Pea that Griffith's betering of his man in the exchanges are largely in the first half of the fight with Basilio's in the next part, clse as hell it is either way. Im leaning towards Basilio's strength doing him good though.
Basilio wins it. Lots of respect for both. Basilio was stronger, punched harder, took the better shot and was super durable. Probably by decision but about a 40% chance Basilio stops him.
I have to go along with you gentlemen,Carmen by dec.You know Emile was a interesting boxer.Who ever said Emile was a master at tying up a boxer was right on. I would have to call him Mr. Clutch!!!Although Emile was well rounded you know he would rather box then punch. You know Emile had a INTERESTING STYLE.What would you guys call it??It really wasnt just boxer/puncher.Maybe Emile s grab &hold contributed to this. Carmen was in a war every time. You Know Emile fought back very well when swarmed on, but I picture Kid Paret giving him a hard time 2nd meeting, Carmen would be even tougher! Carmen by DEC.:happy
On both mans bets day, I`ll go with Carmen to outhustle and outwill Emile in a heck of a fight. The whys and hows have already been covered by fellow posters, so I`ll leave it at that.
