Carmen Basilio vs Floyd Mayweather

It’s funny how styles make fights ....I think Pacquiao would do much better against Carmen Basilio than Floyd Mayweather would

 

The fact he could beat and compete the No1 ever tells me no matter the skill and movement deficit, he'll have his moments BIG TIME. If it's a 15 rounder Floyd would be looking at his hardest fight he could imagine. We've seen it loads, pressure fighters (top tier ones) are a movers nightmare, they can't relax or its the other man's territory, skills and movement a lot of the time gets eroded by that style, there comes a point in the fight where it's trench time. Basilio might just break him

This, an his output wasn't the same at 147 against a swarmer who's tough to boot. Imo, I think Basilio is the man that beats Floyd style wise

 

You mean we still have reasonable posters on this site that see through Mayweather's 50-0 fluff? Especially at welterweight? I was about to retire from here lol.

 

Basilio was a terrific pressure fighter. One of the very best at it. But there's enough steel in Floyd to withstand the heat that Basilio brings, I think. Will with underrated skill is great to have, but I think the very best version of welterweight Floyd answers with all time skill and a whole lot of will. And, given his work ethic, I can see Floyd being able to bear the extra three rounds of pressure if we're scheduling it for 15. No easily....but more than likely admirably. It's closer over 15, and maybe once in three I could see Basilio overtaking him on the cards...

...But on the whole, I still think Floyd holds him off.

 

Floyd never had the power or output at 147 like Robinson did. Floyd's in trouble here style was imo

 

Basilio caught an older past prime Robinson at middleweight. It's still a pretty ludicrous win.

Anyway, Floyd is at least as sharp a puncher as guys like Billy Graham, Lester Felton, and Chuck Davey. Alll these guys could move, feint, and throw with enough authority to keep Basilio off balance for enough time to bank rounds. Can see Mayweather doing the same.

Don't forgot Maidana had a day to rehydrate and put on an additional 17 pounds when he fought Floyd. Basillo would not have that same weight advantage that Maidana had in the same day weigh in era.

 

This fight, is gonna go the distance with the judge having to decide if the like the rough pressure tactics of Basilio or the clean effective work of Mayweather.

I see it being one of those where parts of the round are Floyd hooking off the back foot, landing a straight right and slipping to the side and every so often Floyd backing Basilio up. Other parts will be Floyd pinned against the ropes being pounder with lots of shots that don't lead clean, but cumulatively cause damage.

I don't see anyway the fight ends in a knockout. Nor do I see anyway the fights fails to be a controversial decision.

For my money though, Floyd isn't an overly negative fighter who tends to lose these kind of match ups, I say he edges a SD.

 

I know he beat Sugar Ray Robinson in the first fight as I mentioned above, on Sept 23 1957, but Robinson beat Basilio to win the title for the 5th time on March 25 1958, Mate.
