rip A big time prospect. 16-1, 6 foot 4 190lb and only 20 years old when he fought 6 grueling rounds with Rocky Marciano. He staggered marciano badly. Marciano later said in 1962 "it was the toughest fight of my career" Who knows what he would have become in a few years once he fully matured. Whitney Bimstein thought highly of him Bert saw a vingo fight live He and his wife struggled for years trying to find income while carmine was recovering. Marciano always promised carmine he would set him up with business in Florida, but never followed through
Did not know he was still alive. How was his health in the years after boxing? Did he ever fully recover? RIP
Upon hearing the news I got a lump in my throat about Carmine Vingo's death...God, it was 66 long years ago when my dad and I saw the Bronx heavyweight prospect Carmine Vingo, clash with a much ballyhooed puncher from Brockton, Mass. Rocky Graziano...66 years ago WOW. I had heard brave Carmine after surviving the terrible beating he absorbed, relocated to Florida...I recall watching the tall Vingo on our 12" tv set koing some guy before his ill-fated clash with Marciano , and thought that Vingo would stop the much shorter Rocky, because my dad and I watched many sensational "out of town " prospects before who came to MSG and were beaten. One such case about this time was a young sensational welterweight ko artist named Vince Foster who came to MSG with a great ko record, and managed by the famous Jack Hurley who managed the great Billy Petrolle of "Fargo Express" fame. Vince Foster , from Nebraska took on a Jerseyite named Charley Fusari who I saw at MSG several times. Well in the very1st round the blond haired Foster was flattened by Fusari , virtually stopped his career and soon died in a motorcycle accident...But Rocky Marciano was made from much sterner stuff, and later proved he was the REAL DEAL. Who is to say what would have happened to Vingo if perchance fate didn't allow him to meet this Brockton BLOCKBUSTER Rocky Marciano ? Rest in peace Carmine Vingo, I shall never forget your courage that fateful night in 1949...
